We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecka Rubio and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rebecka, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Starting your own small business is scary enough as it is, but throw a pandemic in there and of the uncertainties just come flooding in! I took a huge risk starting my business. Before buying anything, my accountant Husband would do the math on pricing and profit to make sure we were purchasing the right items for the right price from the right suppliers. Transitioning from a career that I had been working towards my entire life was hard to overcome but I had never realized what my day to day life had been missing until I jumped in full force to run my business. It was scary and overwhelming, but with the guidance of other entrepreneurs they taught me some of the ways to help me be successful, I felt a huge sense of relief to have such a sense of community and support. When you’re running a business, you’re learning something new every single day, but it makes you and your business better in the long run.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started this journey by painting primarily watercolor bookmarks. I slowly started venturing to different mediums and canvases. Before I knew it, I was drawing on hats and painting wall murals. I first started drawing whatever was being requested for orders, but I started gravitating towards drawing anything floral. I was joining different floral drawing/painting challenges on Instagram hosted by some seasoned artists to get some practice with different flowers and fell in love with them! I’m proud to see my progress and to see how far my skills have come in just a few years and constantly learning new things and techniques everyday. This road has not been easy. It was full of self doubt, imposter syndrome and lots of second guessing. But I’m still excited to see where this entire journey will take me, it’s only the beginning.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We and all of our friends and family are huge foodies so we’d of course have to stop by our local Glendora Public Market. They have so many options for everyone. From a brewery and boba to tacos and crepes. It’s a great local spot to visit if you and your family are as indecisive as ours! If your family is like ours, we’ll be visiting Endulza Bake Shop in Glendora, California sometime during their visit. They have freshly delicious sweets and treats daily and the staff is so lovely! Depending on the weekend, if there was a market I’d want to support and introduce my family to, it would be the inland empire sensation The Adventure Markets. Our Friends Caitlyn and Adriana are some of the best market hosts around and always have the most amazing set ups for their events! They are also small business owners and do an amazing job! Supporting other fellow small businesses is so so important to us. Community over competition always.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this life is all possible thanks to my wonderful Husband, David. He believed in my vision and helped me run with it. He is, without a doubt, my biggest supporter. He encourages me on the daily to continue to reach for the stars. He helps me with product ideas and is the man behind the scenes making sure all the numbers line up so that I can just focus on creating. He helps me set up and sell at our monthly markets. Sometimes I think he’s a better salesman for my brand than I am! He helps me with our five year old daughter when I need to get things done or prepare for a market. He’s simply the best and I’m so very lucky to have him! I’d also like to thank my In-Laws for always helping us on market weekends with our daughter. Without them, so much of this adventure wouldn’t be possible. They believed in this journey I think even before I did and everything I’ve ever put my heart and soul into. Thank you both for being so wonderfully amazing. I’d also like to thank my Dad. He’s newly retired and always volunteers his time to spend with his granddaughter, even if it’s just for a few hours so I can work, Thank you, Dad! And to all of my friends who visit almost every single market to support us or even just to stop by or help us clean/pack up faster. Y’all are the best and I’m so grateful for our village!
