We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebekah Love and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rebekah, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
Listen to your intuition above all. I don’t surround myself with yes men and have plenty of people around me who happily check me or tell me when something doesn’t make sense. These same folk believe in me, want the best for me, and support me wholeheartedly. I trust my people 100%. Because of this, I’ve struggled when I have a vision for something and maybe need validation but my trusted circle doesn’t have the same vision.

Recently, I was split between two life changing decisions (business and career related), each path would have changed the trajectory of my life. Loved ones who I respect and trust 1000% were advising me to go one way while my spirit was clearly telling me to go another way. This has been the most important lesson (and reminder) that the vision for my life and vision was placed inside ME. While its amazing that I’m surrounded by folks I trust, respect, and who have my best interest, they don’t replace the guidepost that’s IN ME. I’m happy to say that I went with my intuition and chose one path and my life drastically changed (for the better).

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been focusing more on my zone of genius and learning to do the things I do best. My art, my creativity has always been my mind and my hands. And throughout my life, that looks different so I’m not be attached to how I’m using my hands in the moment it changes (and has changed). My zone of genius is having a vision that I can execute and have others buy into that vision. The reason I know this is because of my creative journey. Everything I do is with purpose and I’m able to rally strangers to support it.

I’m not afraid to explore, to let go, be curious, try new things. I am where I am today because of my diverse, messy, inconsistent, and experimental journey. That part gets infused into everything I do which is easy to buy into because it’s real and human

What makes me different is I don’t care about looking inconsistent and I’m not afraid to let things go. Although, it’s not alway easy being invested in something, and later releasing it. There’s a lot of heartache because I pretend that what others think of me has no effect, but it does. Although I can easily walk away from things, I also think about how that makes me look.

AND at the same time, it takes a lot of courage to walk away because more often then not its for the better!

I’ve learned to do the work necessary to be connected to my higher self, God, my spirit so when its time to listen to her, I hear what’s being said very clearly. This is my guidepost when I’m making decisions, when I’m committing to a goal, or art form at the time, I know I’m doing the emotional and psychological work, I know that voice is leading me in the right direction!

I’d want the world to know that my story has a lot of heartache and trauma and a lot of love and community. My story has space for both to be acknowledged. I’m not ashamed of any of it because it makes me me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Funny enough, AS I’m writing this I was planning a food tour in NY with a friend. New York has the best food and SO many options, and all my friends love to eat so I’d center her visit around food LOL. It would definitely be the summer because that’s the best season in NY. I’d take her to Prospect Park Brooklyn for a picnic or bike ride but on our way there we’d stop for some doubles (a Trinidad street food) and a fresh squeezed juice because its HOT in NY. We’d take our time because days in NY are best experienced long, slow, and spontaneous. We stopped by a street festival or street vendors which is a guarantee in Brooklyn in the summer. For an early lunch, we’d go to Aunts et Uncles, my favorite restaurant right now. Then, we’d head to Brooklyn Museum hopefully its first Saturdays. I’m the type of new mom who can’t have too many activities in one day so I’d most like head home from there. BUT, I’d invite her back so we can drink, smoke, or hang out some more.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband Shola, hands down! I’ve known him for over 14 years and we basically grew up together. We’re not high school sweethearts but we met as kids. Shola’s unwavering love and support has literally lifted and carried me to where I am today. The way he’s generously and consistently poured into me since we met has earned him all the credit, recognition, praise, and gratitude from me. I wouldn’t be the woman that I am today nor would I have the success in my business without his ever presence and support on ALL fronts. Shola is the type of partner women dream of and I get to call him my husband. From every photo he’s taken to every encouraging word he’s spoken to me, he’s the love in my success story. I love and appreciate him so much that I want to dedicate my shout to him.
