We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebelle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rebelle, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
My journey began in a small village Pribislavec in Medimurje, Croatia, where I first discovered my love for music. It all started when I started singing and performing for my parents in our living room. Recognizing my potential, my kindergarten teacher encouraged my participation in children’s festivals, setting the stage for numerous festival wins and competitions that ignited my passion.

As I progressed through elementary school, I decided to deepen my musical education by enrolling in the Art School Miroslav Magdalenic. Here, I began learning the accordion from Senka Basek, a strict yet influential mentor who not only taught me music but also instilled values like diligence and responsibility.

At the age of 10, I made a significant leap by participating in ‘Supertalent 2011’ in Croatia, where I made it to the superfinals. This experience motivated me to take on new challenges. In the 7th grade, I embarked on a demanding journey, attending three schools simultaneously, often enduring long bus rides between them, because I wanted to study music more than anything. My parents, always pragmatic, supported me but also emphasized the commitment required to pursue my dreams, even if it meant sacrificing time with friends.

After middle school, I achieved my dream by enrolling in the Varazdin School of Music, where I studied solo singing under MA Blanka Tkalcic, a distinguished mezzo-soprano. Driven by a love for music, I pursued a major in singing, with a dream of adding another major in music theory. Overcoming obstacles, including limited piano education, I dedicated a year to mastering piano skills and advanced theory classes, eventually earning both degrees – Solo singing and Music Theory.

In my junior year, I got to portray the main antagonist in a Croatian musical by Ivan J. Skender. That expanded my horizons, steering me beyond the world of opera into musical theatre and commercial pop music.

While my initial plan was to study opera abroad, the allure of exploring diverse musical genres, and business, led me to apply secretly to American colleges. In the face of skepticism and mockery for postponing college to work, I tirelessly saved for my American education, culminating in admission to LACM in Pasadena.

The reality of financing my education proved daunting, but I was determined not to let this opportunity slip away. I worked tirelessly, taking on extra shifts and organizing solo concerts to secure funds for my first year.

Reflecting on my journey, I realize that every challenge and setback served as a stepping stone to something greater. My upbringing in a nurturing yet disciplined environment instilled in me the unwavering commitment and resilience needed to pursue my dreams, and that is how Rebelle was born.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My musical path initially started in classical traditions, as I mentioned before. This journey led me to participate in various festivals and shows, where I achieved some notable wins and performed for the president of Croatia.

Like many musicians/artists, I was also misunderstood in childhood and schools, and frequently asked about my ‘side plan’ in case I don’t succeed in music. It was a challenge, as my commitment to being a musician was often not taken seriously. However, I always was and still am determined to pursue my dreams, and I know that in the end, I will always be able to say “I wasn’t afraid of taking risks, and I gave my all!” Today, I still use those, and new experiences as a fuel to write and create.

A turning point in my career happened when I played the main villain named Dina in the first Croatian musical ever written, ‘The Music of My Heart.’ This experience, composed by Ivan J. Skender and written by Marijana Nola, ignited my passion for music outside of the classical world, leading me to fall in love with musicals and the world of commercial pop music.

The anger and emotions that I hid for years have led to the creation of my debut single, ‘Break Me.’ This single was written by three people, Rebelle (myself), LUPO, and Pascal Shrady. We wrote this song together on the floor of one bedroom. We recorded ‘Break Me’ in a home studio, thanks to the expertise of Charlie Lo Presti. This DIY approach not only allowed us to capture the essence of the song but also showcased the power of determination in the creative process, and taught me about the industry itself “first-hand”. It’s amazing what you can accomplish with the right people and a shared vision. “Break Me” made me an artist, and made me realize how blessed I am to be able to do the thing I love the most, even as an unsigned independent artist.

I like to think that my performances are not just about the music but about creating a multisensory journey. I just recently had my debut live show in LA, performing my original music and my arrangements of some famous songs, and I loved every second of it. Working with the crowd (for the crowd) and keeping them entertained was always one of the most inspiring things to do on stage. It’s about making sure that everyone in the audience can feel the adrenaline, connect to the story, and make everyone feel like they’re a superstar for the night when they dance and put themselves in the song’s scenario.

I’ve also learned along this journey that challenges are a part of any artist’s story. Self-doubt, perfectionism, and navigating a foreign land while managing my entire career independently have been some of my hurdles. However, I’ve discovered the power of friendship/collaboration and the importance of asking for help when needed. The support of the right people can be transformative.

In conclusion, my artistry is an expression of resilience, positivity, and the pursuit of dreams. I create music that connects with people emotionally, whether they’re dancing to the rhythms or reading the lyrics, and I always strive to craft music that’s richly layered in instrumentation and production, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in every nuanced element of the song. ‘Break Me’ is a testament to the power of determination and self-strength, showcasing what can be achieved with a burning will in your heart.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend would visit Los Angeles, I’d make it a point to introduce them to the vibrant live music scene that’s truly unique to this city. Live shows, music venues, and open mics are all part of the LA experience that we don’t have back in my country. It’s a chance to immerse ourselves in the heartbeat of the city’s music culture.

We’d explore Downtown LA, a place we often watched on TV, especially when Jackie Chan graced the screen in ‘Rush Hour.’ It’s not just a trip down memory lane but an opportunity to capture the essence of the city with iconic photo-worthy locations and hidden, free rooftop spots if you know where to look for them!

When hunger strikes, we’d indulge in quintessential California experiences, savoring the delights of Starbucks, Urth Cafe, See’s Candies, and In-N-Out Burger – culinary treasures that are a must-try for anyone visiting the Golden State. We’d also explore places like LACMA lights, and shopping havens, like Sephora, not found in Croatia, adding a touch of California glamour to our excursion.

No visit to LA would be complete without strolling along the famous Walk of Fame. After all, we all need a taste of ‘fame’ in our lives and feeling close to our idols, even if just for a moment. And for a bit of adventure and breathtaking views, we’d embark on a hike to see the iconic Hollywood sign up close.

As a special treat, I’d take my friend to the Rialto Theatre in South Pasadena, where ‘La La Land’ shot one of it’s famous scenes. It’s a chance to relive the magic of the silver screen and the music that makes LA truly unforgettable.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As I reflect on my journey, I want to dedicate this shoutout to the incredible individuals who have played pivotal roles in my life and success. My unwavering pillars of support are at the forefront, my parents, Patricia and Dejan, and my brother, Paris. Their constant love, mentorship, and encouragement have been the driving force behind my every endeavor. Whenever I faced challenges or uncertainties, they put everything aside to help me find my way.

I also want to express my heartfelt appreciation to other significant figures in my journey. Gualtiero, also known as artist LUPO, has been there to guide me through the challenges of L.A., cheer in the first rows every time I would perform, and share with me all the music and life endeavors!

Valentina and Melani, my dearest friends, have been by my side, despite the miles and time zones that separate us. Their unwavering friendship and presence in my life have been a constant source of strength and joy.

Blanka and Jessica, my vocal guides and transformational figures, have played a crucial role in shaping my artistic voice and abilities.

My hometown Pribislavec, the city of Cakovec, the city of Prelog, the city of Mursko Sredisce, and my province Medimurje for always being supportive and ready to help!

To all of these extraordinary individuals, I owe a debt of gratitude for their love, support, and mentorship, which have been instrumental in my journey to where I am today.
