We had the good fortune of connecting with Remaiya Marshall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Remaiya, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always had a passion for makeup. When I was a kid I would collect all of my granny’s lipsticks and try different looks in my room. I would feel empowered and beautiful. With all the chaos around me, makeup has been like an escape. No matter what’s going on in my life, when I pick up my makeup brush it’s like nothing else matters. I feel a sense of peace like it’s therapy. That’s why I emphasize that my work is more than makeup it’s an experience.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My artistry is based on Thee Makeup Barbiee Experience. I build confidence through makeup, I raise vibrations through affirmations during the session, I expand comfort zones through photography. I provide cameras, ring lights, and photo booth drops. What sets me different is that I redefine what a Barbie means. I grew up seeing ones on TV with blonde hair, blue eyes, and white skin. My goal is to break social norms, and cooperate all different people, shapes, sizes, and shades, what I’m most proud about is my studio, the feeling of when I came back to L.A., and decorating it was surreal. I’m excited about possible expansion, and having multiple studios across the U.S.. I got to where I am because I struggles, I sacrificed, and I manifested. I always overcome challenges by taking mental breaks when things became too much, I preserved, kept going, and definitely drunk a lot of wine. I took advantage of all opportunities, and the lesson I learned along the way was to be patient, to follow my intuition, to be my authentic self, to stay true to myself, tunnel vision, focusing on the bigger picture, not the distractions around me, and knowing the difference between people who really support me, and people who don’t. I want the world to know my brand/story is if I can do it, you can too. I came from nothing and worked for everything. I truly am the sunflower that grew from concrete.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
To start off I would take them to South Gate Park in the morning to exercise, journal, and meditate. Afterwards I would take them to Starbucks to get a healthy drink, then we would go back to my house to shower, and get dressed. Next we would go to the beach, walk around, grab some food at a local restaurant, and possibly get in the water. I would invite some of my friends to join us, and we would have a real chill relaxed day.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to thank anyone that has ever took a chance on me. I’d like to thank my bestfriend Nae for always helping me, and being there when I needed her to. Thank you to Lu Lu for picking me up and taking me to school because I didn’t always like to catch the train, and putting me on to other makeup gigs, you a real one. I’d like to thank Ashley for the encouragement, and always keeping my spirits lifted, she always kept it real. I’d like to thank my sister for her patience when it came to me, she always wanted me to live a better life than her and to not give up on myself. I would also like to thank my dad for everything. I would also like to thank the trials and tribulations, without it I wouldn’t be who I am today. And lastly I’d like to thank God for helping me discover my purpose, and find my true self.
