We had the good fortune of connecting with Ric Sexton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ric, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success is understanding the market/business that I am in. When I first started my career as an entertainer, I often found myself worried if I would be good enough. Then I started to realize that it’s a fanbase just for me, I just have to find it and build off of it. I realized what was missing in live performances around me. Once I found that, I was on my way to bigger and better opportunities! I had to understand that I don’t have to be the best saxophone player ever. I just had to be the best at what I bring to the table with my performances. As long as I’m original and put in the energy required, I will succeed. I always thought I had to be the Micheal Jordan of playing the saxophone when I realized, Micheal Jordan wasn’t the only player in the NBA. Building on opportunities with faith and commitment to my craft and implementing my wisdom to provide a memorable experience has put me in rooms that I could only have imagined being in!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is live performance. I am a saxophonist but I consider myself an entertainer. My fanbase love my artistry because of the energy I put into each show. I like to think what sets me apart from others is my charisma and stage presence when I am on stage. I want people to actually see that I am having fun and enjoying what I am doing. I want my body language to show it as well as my facial expressions. This isn’t an act, it is true passion and the audience will know if it is real or not! I got to where I am today by adding on to my performance each time and always surprising my audience with new things. I never want to get comfortable with where I am, I have to keep entertaining and keep getting better. I know that as fast as this success has come, it can slip away even faster. I think about the small things and pay attention to detail. I want the world to know that the experience I offer will never be short of an actual show! I will always do my best to keep you entertained from the moment I step on stage, until the time the band ends the last song.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am currently in Cincinnati Ohio, I would definitely plan to visit downtown to hang, eat and drink. I perform at a lot of these places so if you’re into music, you’ve come to the right place. A brand new hangout bar called Cinema just opened and plays a variety of music to enjoy. This is truly the sing a long bar where you will hear R&B, Soul, Neo-Soul and of course some good dance music. Another spot where live bands perform on the regular is Nostalgia Wine & Jazz bar also located Downtown. Grown & Sexy vibes and the place definitely lives up to it’s name! Also a great spot for social media pics that we all love. If you are into the Theater, The William Francis Theatre has a variety of shows for you to enjoy! Make sure you visit Alabama Fish Bar, Agave & Rye, Kickbacks, Jus Cookin’, & Soul Secrets for food.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
God. I owe everything to the man above for guiding me and watching over me through my journey. For picking me up when I was down, for strengthening my weaknesses, for simply everything!
