We had the good fortune of connecting with Rob Moffitt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rob, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have been wanting to start my own business for years. Straight out of High school I was torn between going to art school and nursing school and ultimately decided on Nursing School. Although nursing has been a rewarding career it never allowed me to explore my creative side. I finally decided to start a business in the middle of the Pandemic. Between the stress of the hospital as a nurse through the Pandemic and the extra free time at home I started to really think about what I wanted out of life and what my next career shift might be. I opened the Haus Plant truck during the Pandemic and it has been a fun rollercoaster ever since. I have only been open for 10 months and I already have two employees and have done so much more than I ever could have imagined. Opening this business has allowed me to explore the creative side in myself that I had always had just put on the back burner. I am blessed and excited that I get to grow into that version of myself with this new business venture.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have always felt that I was more of an artist but also felt a bit trapped and didn’t allow myself to be creative. I think by starting the Haus plant, it has allowed me to build things with my hand, whether it be arrangements or interior plant design in someone’s home. I have also found that since I started this business and allowed my creative side to grow I have also pursued other creative interests that I had in the past such as painting and playing the piano. I think being able to work with my friend Felix and his plant shop I was really able to learn a lot about how to run a business, I also took a few Horticulture and Botany courses at UCLA extension to further my knowledge in the field. I think the big lesson that I have learned is to not let your creativity stop you. Doing something creative makes you feel vulnerable, what if people don’t like what you are doing or think its a bad idea? The what ifs can really hold you back. I am still learning every day to create and be creative and knowing I’m doing my best is what ultimately brings me joy.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had someone in town visiting I would love to bring them to the Huntington gardens for a Saturday afternoon exploring. I would say we would pack a picnic and wine and enjoy an afternoon there. One of my other favorite things to do is to drive up through Malibu and enjoy the scenic views.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One of my best friends and mentor is to thank for where I am at today. My friend Felix owns another plant store in Los Angeles called The Juicy Leaf. About five or six years ago he noticed that I was starting to have an interest in plants and design and asked me to come work with him. I started going into his plant store and helping him around the shop on my days off from the hospital. After a few years of working with him he finally encouraged me to go out and start my own business. I cant thank him enough for bringing me into this world and encouraging me to peruse my passion. I have no doubt in my mind that one day we will work together.
