We had the good fortune of connecting with Rob Styles and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rob, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I would say why I chose an artistic career, but it wouldn’t be truthful. I didn’t choose it, it actually chose me. From childhood, the allure of art, in all mediums, has lived in my conscious and sub conscious. From, building houses, and cars with Lego’s, to drawing, to creative writing, to poetry. Plus an unmeasurable love for the cinematic arts. No matter what I did in my life, prior to being a writer/director; the calling to create art, hovered over me. Reminding me at every moment of failure, or turmoil, that I’m meant to be artist. It turned from that, into reminding me, every time I clocked in for work, when I went to lunch break, when I came back from lunch break, when I clocked out of work, when I walked back into my apartment after work, and when I went to sleep, it reminded me in dreams. So I decided, to get some things together in my life, and focus on the field of art, solely. I had to, it wouldn’t let me do anything else successfully.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe that what sets me apart from other writers and directors, is my ability to listen. The more you listen to someone and properly digest the information that they’re communicating, the better chances you have of communicating back with them, in an attentive, interested, invested, empathetic manner. Since childhood, I’ve closely listened to what the world was saying to me. I speak back to the world with my screenplays and film projects. I’m most excited, about the upcoming release, of my latest short film, “A Social (Media) Construct. I got where I am today professionally by ignoring all the loud no’s in my head, and listening to that one whispering yes. It was not easy, I worked a ton of crappy jobs and put up with all kinds of, not so great humans, along the way. The biggest lesson I learned was, don’t let anyone, keep you from creating, yourself especially. I want the world to know, that I’m a filmmaker because I love it, and I make films for those who love cinema.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My sister Nikki Styles. She’s always been supportive of my dreams and goals. A voice of reason, when I’m out of sorts. The party animal when I succeed. Or, a mosquito constantly buzzing in my ear when I’m being lazy or making excuses, for not moving forward with my art. Years ago, she told me that I didn’t have to hunger, to be a writer and director. It lit a fire under me, and here I am years later, multiple award winning, feature film and TV scripts, under my belt.
