We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert Beddall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robert, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As two expats with family all over the world, we always struggle to give creative and thoughtful gifts to our little nieces and nephews. So, instead of the usual, shipping a gift from Amazon for her birthday one year, we recorded a special story for our niece in Sydney. We made her the hero in a story filled with all her favorite things, It was a roaring success! Everyone loved it so much, that word of mouth began to spread. Before we knew it we started getting requests from other parents to create a story for their kids. We had so much fun writing and performing these personalized kids narratives, doing silly voices and adding the exciting sound effects, that it got us thinking. As two people with backgrounds in children’s theatre and performing, and with our equipment gathering dust, we thought we might be on to something. Especially after the year that was in it, we found that we had come up with a thoughtful and unique way for people to really say I love you. This was an easy decision for us. We took the all or nothing mentality and jumped right in. We were starting a business!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Perhaps the most obvious aspect that sets us apart is that we are from Ireland and England so we like to think our accents help add a lot of fun to our stories. One client sent us a video of his son listening to his personalized story and he couldn’t stop laughing at the deep Brummie accent we had given dad. Or maybe it was the big burp sound effect….. Of course it hasn’t been easy, like any entrepreneur we have put in a lot of work behind the scenes along the way to ensure that people know about Time to Tell a Story. Our passion for creating these unique stories and seeing the joyous reactions from kids and families alike definitely fuels us onwards.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We are hesitant to share this little gem with the world but Crown of India in Hollywood is THE best Indian food you will find in LA. The Kings Head pub in Santa Monica is a favorite for a pint and some fish and chips. Venice beach is always a great place for a walk, picnic or sightseeing.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
