We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert L Jamison, CCM,BHC,PhD and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Robert L, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process of starting my own business was somewhere exciting I was very ambitious as a kid in fact when I was in junior high school in the 8th grade, I was carrying a briefcase to school when an average student will be carrying books in their hands. I was focus on becoming an entrepreneur at the age of 14 years old therefore I work hard for 6 or 7 years afterwards, and I open up my first business that was called Jamison and associate it was an upholstery shop where I contracted staff at that time, they were old enough to be my parents. At age 18, I started working at Townsend interior for about 4 years later. Mr. Larry Townsend gave me an opportunity to open up my own upholstery shop. I was inspired by my own attributes and my ambition to become a business owner. The entrepreneur side of my life started growing up in the Lamar Terrace project. At that time, I was 14 years old when I started my first job.

Great success factors to starting my own business are that I am consistent in making informed decisions on how I wanted to brand my companies Alternative Healthcare LA, Alternative Health Wellness Center, Inc. and 5 Stars Music Group. All three companies are built with integrity. I utilize my knowledge, skill, attitude, values, and other person characteristics that are essential to perform the job or role and that differentiate solid from superior performance. When we work together, we all win, and being a leader doesn’t require a title; and one thing for sure, having a title doesn’t make you one”. So, my advice is Don’t stay in organizations where you are repeatedly dismissed & minimized. Where your ideas are ignored, and your voice doesn’t matter. Where you spend so much energy trying to “fit in,” eventually dimming your light. Go where you are celebrated, not tolerated. One of the most important life lessons that my business taught me is that you need to learn the importance of patience. Because your clients are the ones who make certain that you eat, and your bills are paid. I am an individual with the ability to wait for something significant to happen without feeling frustrated due to the delay. In life, you’ll have to wait for a lot of things without feeling negative. Good things don’t come easy, and for every action, there’s an equal opposite reaction. Learn to be flexible with your goals.

I practiced great work ethics, and I treated people exactly like i wanted to be treated. My work experiences It’s like flexible arrangements, providing care for my patients and dependent family members, and my employees are friendly in my absence or while I’m on vacation. Our company policy and procedure are firm, imparting education or training, promoting fitness and healthy living, and creating fun committees are some of my favorite work-life balances.  I came up with the idea to start my own private practice based on a 20-year background and working in cardiovascular neurology General Orthopedic GYN in plastic surgery I was inspired by some of my fellowship doctors that I work with on staff at Baptist Memorial Hospital East Memphis Tennessee which is a medical training facility for the University of Tennessee and in 2006 I obtained my doctoral degree in Behavioral Health and I started up a PICC Line Clinic called Intravenous Nurses, Inc. Along with three other registered nurses I work with in surgery, emergency room, and intensive care unit at Baptist Memorial Hospital A peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC), also called a PICC line, is a long, thin tube that’s inserted through a vein in your arm and passed through to the larger veins near your heart.

I am inspired by my beloved mother Mary V Lewis who passed away on September 6th, 2012, from stage 4 lung cancer. My mother death was painful for our entire family. After a long and emotionally wrenching struggle with stage 4 lung cancer and the setting of many of her health conditions played a significant part of my success in health care. I was encouraged to become successful because I come from a low-income housing community call Lamar Terrace Projects which is in the heart of Midtown Memphis Tennessee and when I was a kid I grew up in a domestic violent home where my stepfather was a drug addict and he used to abuse my mom and I. At that time I was a helpless kid so when I got older I made a promise to my mom that I would become successful and make certain that I’m able to provide for her because she was always there for me and as I live today everything that I accomplished related to all of my endeavors I do it to honor my mother legacy simply because she still lives in me. I was 18 years old when my grandfather passed away with colon cancer and I made a promise to him that someday I would get into the medical field to be available to take care of my own family members. So, I was encouraged to pursue a medical career based on me watching my grandfather suffer before he passed away and I wanted to be a caregiver for my family members which includes my mother my grandmother my siblings and my own children. I work very much to become successful and pursue my medical career and have been going strong for 35 years.

I strongly disagree with the controversial advice that people who come from the project or those coming from a low-income housing community, most critic would say that they would never become successful. The way I see it, education is power, and if God gave you a mindset where you will be blessed to be educated, just stay focused and don’t listen to the people who advise you in a negative way. Don’t give in to them because of your circumstance. I will always disagree with the negative advice because life has knocked me down a few times. It has shown me things I never wanted to see, I have experienced sadness and failures. but by the Grace of God, don’t give up I am your example it takes blood, sweet, tears, and determination, and if I can do it, you can do it too.

There will always be risks in your life Journeys including when you step out of faith in starting your own business. The way I see it, if you going to go out on a limb, go out on the limb for yourself. When I look back over my career, I can truly say that not everything I invested money into was meant for me to do. But what I can say is that I learn from each and every mistake that I made which was part of my growth and if you reviewed my resume it would note that I’m a 35 year Healthcare Provider, a prominent Medical Clinic owner Playwright, Published Arthor, Songwriter and entrepreneur so don’t give up on your dreams and don’t be afraid to take risk because we only fall to get back up. I made sacrifices in my youth days to basically cut off a lot of my friends. I stopped hanging out with the guys and running the streets because it was a distraction to my career and my family. Here’s why, two of my children were born when I was a teenager and the other two were born when i was a young man in my 20’s so I knew for a fact that I needed to get my life together and be a role model to them. It would be hypocritical for me to try to discipline the kids when, in fact, I was a poor leader based on the inappropriate decision I’ve made in the past. Therefore, I made a change in my life and created better living habits.
