We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert Ramos and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi robert, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
We started the salon, Estilo Salon in 1991 and in 2017 we rebranded and put our names on the door, Ramos Carreon Salon same location same team, a new name and a newly remodeled salon .
The thought process was really about creating a space for creative people to get together and have a place to be creative and have their individual style. We had come from salons that we gave a big percentage of our money to and at that moment we wanted a space for the creatives to keep as much as of the money we were earning. The idea was for the salon to be able to maintain itself and and the stylists keep most of their money. We do all things hair and now have Brittany, an amazing manicurist.

Most of our stylists do red carpet events for celebrities, photoshoots, commercials, videos, movies and TV shows.
We have also participated in fashion week week in NYC and LA. Were came from Beverly Hills and we wanted something slightly off the beaten track. We found the location that we thought would be up and coming and boy did it come up, Beverly Blvd. This year is our 33 year anniversary. We have helped launch some of the biggest names in the industry and are super proud to conitnue to do so.

some of our clients include Stevie nicks, bette Midler, Jessica Alba, Kelly Clarkson, George Lopez, Melissa McCarthy, Katey Sagal, Eva Mendez, to name a few.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have always said that I want to be the hairstylist that can do anything and work in all mediums of the industry.
I started in a salon and from there I started to do small photoshoots for up and coming models. I then started to work for the legendary hair care company called Sebastian Intl. I earned how to be a platform artist and started to do shows around the country to launch the newest products. I simultaneously was meeting actresses and really wanted to break into movies and television and got my first break with Lesley Ann Warren, where she asked me to work on a Movie made for TV. I learned how to break down a script, how to keep continuity and how to work on a set. Being new to this world I didn’t know a thing so I asked a lot of questions and took help from anyone that would help. With Bette Midler I learned how to work with the expensive movie wigs and that was very different than working with the less expensive wigs you would buy from a wig store. I had to learn how to style them and most importantly how to care for them and clean them. Working with jessica Alba brought a whole new clientele for me and had the honor and pleasure of giving her Iconic Honey hilites and creating some of her most iconic red carpet looks. I learned how to work on photo shoots, commercials and videos. I love being creative and being able to do work in all mediums of my industry. when I was coming up I was told that I had to choose, be a stylist for shoots or work in a salon or work in movies and TV. I thought why can’t i do it all. I wanted to do it all, so I did and continue to do so. I enjoy my salon team and feed off the energy we have. We are a family. I’m most proud of passing down all of my knowledge to my assistants so they will be able to jump into any situation and be able excel in it. It wasn’t easy, but knowing what I know now and knowing that if I can make it just a little easier for my team makes it all worth the while.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well I’ve lived in Silverlake for the past 30 years so I’m a little impartial to my hood…
The thing about Los Angeles is that there is always a new place to eat at or visit, so here goes.
My favorite spots to eat would definitely be Dama DTLA, Damian (which is the sister restaurant to the famous Pujol in mexico city), Stella Cafe ( they have a cool bar where you can have drinks), Figaro Bistro, Holbox, Picaresca Barra de Cafe, The Alcove, Musso & Franks, Yeyas (for authentic mexican food),
Griffith park for a hike, visit Hollywood Blvd and find your favorite star, Echo Park to ride on the paddle boats dressed as swans, visit the arts district in Downtown LA, Gran Central market for a quick bite, visit the Farmers market.
Westy hollywood is always lively and fun and lets not forget all parts of Melrose Ave for shopping.
For those wanting a little fancy in their life, Rodeo Blvd in Beverly Hills is always fun to go shop or window shop.
I love Huntington Gardens in Pasadena and then a nice stroll through Old Town Pasadena.
Visit Venice beach and then go to Abbott Kenny and have some food at Gjelina.
Malibu is a beautiful beach to visit.
Take a studio tour to Universal Studios and get on the rides and let’s not forget Disneyland, Its the happiest place on earth.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I came to LA at 17 and didn’t know a person but I met a friend who helped me navigate this industry and her name is Jennifer Jones and she taught me how to look and be professional and most of all to believe in myself.
Sebastian INTL really helped me hone in my skills as a stylist and that is where I met my soon to be business partner, Philip Carreon.
I met Lesley Ann Warren a super talented actress that believed in me and gave me my first shot at a Harpers Bazaar photo shoot and from there I met the talented makeup artist and owner of Senna Cosmetics, Eugenia Weston who would be the one to refer me to Bette Midler and that is where my career took off in ways I could never imagine.
