We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert Smith III and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robert, how do you think about risk?
Taking risk is PARAMOUNT to achieving any part of your goals in this life. If we don’t take risks, it keeps us safe, doesn’t take us out of our comfort zone, & inhibits us from growing. Like one of my biggest inspirations Steve Burton said, “Comfort, is the enemy of progress”. I live by that mantra. Taking those leaps of faith, pass or fail, allows us to grow and become stronger individuals across the board for whatever we’re hustling through life for.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think something that separates me from others is my never-ending need to not give up on what I want out of my life. A lot of people that go down the artist path discover how difficult it is & choose to move on to something else, something more easily attainable. That has never been me. This life isn’t something I chose, it’s what I’m suppose to be doing. As cliché as that might sound, it’s the truth. Being an actor & model is in my blood, it’s all I eat, think, & dream about. Pushing myself in every avenue is how I’ve landed to this point in my journey today. Nothing in this life is easy. Nothing worth having ever is, but it’s about how much hustle & grit you’re willing to put out into the universe for even that one win, & if you’re comfortable waiting a while for the next. I accept the broke days, the no food days, the days you have to ask yourself “how am I going to take this $25 & stretch it for the rest of the week?” I accept it all because it put hair on my chest & showed me what I can handle & overcome not just in this industry, but in the world. It’s about showing up and working those 40 hour a week shifts while hustling to the odd gig to get a little extra cash for rent, while making sure those audition tapes are in on time. It’s about not being to proud to ask for help sometimes when you’re struggling & hustling your way to the top. A lot of us are independent & stubborn as heck, but trust there those out there that see you working & will have your back when you really need it. Something I want ANY aspiring artist to know is, please do not let fear stop you. We all have hard days & fail, but you pick yourself up, learn a little something, & keep pushing. I’ve gotten to meet and act with some amazing people in the industry, I’ve been published as a model both in America & overseas, I’ve walked in New York, Los Angeles, & Paris Fashion Weeks. I started from the bottom & I’m still learning and grinding for my dream, same as you. I will be an Oscar winning actor one day, it’s my destiny, but if it’s 5, 10, 15 years from now, it doesn’t matter. It’s staying consistent, staying hungry, & not letting anyone stand in the way of what I know is in the plan; & that’s on period.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ok! So anyone that knows me knows that I’m just a big kid, so we would ABSOLUTELY be going to Disneyland! I am a Disney baby through and through. When I finally moved to LA in 2019, I finally got to go & when I say it was like a religious experience, it was like Mickey came from the heavens & blessed me on that day. There is so much food, drinks, & rides. I’m an adrenaline junky, so give me all the amusement parks. We’d defiantly have to check out Grand Central Market on S Broadway in DT Los Angeles for all the foodie needs. That place has a plethora of dining options that can literally satisfy anybody. I had vegan ramen the other week! I didn’t even know that was a thing haha. I’m very into the aesthetic of a bar on the beach, I mean were in Cali, so for bar hopping, I’d have to say Venice all day. There is just so many places on the strip to hit, then you have the beach right there to walk on before you Uber-X yourself home. Winning. I mean to visit, touring around Hollywood never gets boring to me. Being around all the sights and sounds at night is almost transcendent. Just makes you feel like you’re home. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I 1000% dedicate this to my family & chosen family. Without these people, I would defiantly not be at the level I am today. Working in the industry as an artist is one of the most stressful, draining, & mentally challenging things a person can ever do in this career. One can have all the ambition & gumption in the world, but not having some kind of support when those bad days hit, & they hit a lot, is such a detriment to you. I will not be naming names, because a few of them have always said they don’t want to be in the public eye, but they know who they are. To all my fams that have been there for the random phone calls, late night car talks, 3 hour Facetimes, & threads on threads of messages; thank you. This is for you. As powerful as my fire is, it would be nothing without the support of my brothers & sisters fueling it on the daily. Forever grateful.
