We had the good fortune of connecting with Rocio Camacho and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rocio, what do you attribute your success to?
Having a plan on how you’re going to execute your goals. Thinking of ways on how you can get your first step in to where you ultimately want to end up. A positive attitude defiantly helps, especially when things get tough. For me these were very important factors that helped in my success.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Currently, I’m a Sound Trainee for TV and Film and I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the sound departments I met while I was working as a production assistant. I knew I wanted to work in sound since I graduated college, but it was tough finding out how to get into that field. Luckily, I met people who took the time to tell me their stories and experiences on how they got into sound. The road to becoming a sound trainee was not as long as I thought it would be, but it definitely had some challenges. What I learned along the way is to be patient and to not give up even when things don’t seem to be going the way you want them to. In the end, everything will all work out.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I spend most of the week working on-set, but I would certainly plan for something fun over the weekend. I’d make a list of places I haven’t gone to yet and would see how many we could go to over the weekend.
We would definitely start off by having breakfast at Great White in Venice, CA. They have the best banana bread I have ever had!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Ron Hairston, Kayla Croft, and Britney Darrett have been great mentors to me ever since I started working in TV and Film.
I worked with Ron on two TV shows and on both shows he pulled me aside and showed me his sound equipment and explained to me what he was doing when he started recording. He encouraged me to ask his team questions and to observe the sound utility wiring an actor. Kayla was the first sound utility I met, and she explained to me the different ways I could get into the sound union. She answered all my questions, showed me her sound cart and the materials she used when she wired an actor. Britney allowed me to help her on-set with minor tasks, and gave me a glimpse of what a sound utility does on a daily basis. She gave me great advice and told me what things to look out for once I started working in sound.
Without their guidance and knowledge I would not be where I am today.
