We had the good fortune of connecting with RODERIKO POP and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi RODERIKO, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I developed an artistic career because all people should be true to themselves and listen to their instincts. I believe that all people who have some artistic gift already know it since they are children. In my case; I always knew since I was a child that I liked to paint; sing and make songs and act in theater; and for this reason I developed in all the disciplines of art that I felt came in me.
I received my degree as an actor at the Conservatory of Dramatic Art; I also studied at the School of Fine Arts but I did not finish this career; and on the music side I always created songs instinctively and intuitively.-
Going back to the original question; I finally decided to develop my career as a singer-songwriter during 2020; because when the COVID pandemic happened I told myself; I must start fulfilling my dreams; and follow my passion; since everything that will be successful in life will be what we do with passion.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a fervent believer that one should fulfill their dreams even if others tell us that we are not the best. It took me 40 years of my life to encourage myself to make my songs public because I do not consider myself a singing virtuoso.-
Watching the film about the life of FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS made me understand how important it is to fulfill one’s dreams; and in my case, decide to sing because that’s what makes me happiest; and do it even if it’s not perfect.-
I started writing songs in my mind when I was 14 years old; while riding the BUS to go to school; immediately my head began to write songs; then as soon as I got to the classroom I wrote them on a piece of paper; and so I collected a lot of songs but I always kept them to myself, out of shame and fear about the opinion of others.
Nothing in life was easy for me; but what did mark a before and after was the COVID; I must be grateful that thinking about the possibility of dying without having fulfilled my dreams was the final impulse that made me decide and start my musical career.-
I have learned that one should not be paralyzed by fear or the opinion of others; people will always talk.-
Life is very short and we should not just let it pass; we must learn to realize what we dream of; EVERYTHING STARTS WITH A DREAM.- But not everyone dares to make those dreams come true.-
Everyone should also know that you are never too old to do anything new; to be old is to let life go by
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am also a traveler who was lucky enough to get to know more countries than the years I am. If I had to take a friend to visit and enjoy some places in the city, I would do the following depending on the country I am in:
in REYKJAVIK I would invite him to see a concert at HARPA (maybe a BJÖRK show) and then we would walk along the waterfront to the lighthouse to wait for the northern lights to appear.-
In STOCKHOLM I would also like to walk around GAMLA STAN (the old city) and make a FIKA eating some delicious cinnamon rolls; and to end a theater night at CIRKUS.-
In LONDON we would go for a walk in REGENT PARK; we would remember all the iconic places of the QUEEN (the last queen for me) and then we would go to KOKO to see a live DJ set.-
In BUENOS AIRES which is the place where I live; I would like to stroll through the bohemian neighborhoods and spend a night in the “MILONGAS” to enjoy TANGO in its original essence.-
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I was abandoned by my parents when I was 6 years old; and at that very moment I discovered an ALBUM by the Argentine singer NACHA GUEVARA. This singer/performer who has triumphed all over the world and today is 82 years old; she was the person who opened the window for me to many incredible songs and made me meet authors like BORIS VIAN; GEORGE BRASSENS; TOM LEHRER; STEPHEN SONDHEIM; BENEDETTI; DISCEPOLO; FLANDERS AND SWANN; JACQUES BREL and many more authors of the past millennium.- NACHA GUEVARA was my music teacher without knowing it.-
And all these authors, plus many other rarer and little known ones have been my greatest influence when creating my own original songs.
Then; music was my family; the great authors that I listened to as a child my home; without knowing it all of them were my company during a lonely childhood; all of them helped me develop my own world of art and iconulated in me the dream of being a singer creating my own wonderful songs.
