Meet Rosalina Felipe | Podcast Host & Advocate For Young Women’s Health

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rosalina Felipe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rosalina, how does your business help the community?
I created the podcast with my co-host Shauna to provide a sense of community for young women under 40 who have or are currently going through breast cancer. We want to create a supportive community so young women do not feel alone in their journey with breast cancer. The other side of this is that we want to bring awareness that breast cancer doesn’t discriminate against age, and this disease can happen to anyone, even with no family history. We want to provide resources and education for young women to be in tune with their bodies, know when something doesn’t feel or look right, and advocate for their health. Often times doctors will dismiss your concerns because “you’re too young” to get breast cancer.
Lastly, as a Latina, it is important to bring awareness and education to other Latinas and create a movement to make your health a priority. Speaking up about your health to your family and friends is not seen as a weakness and should be discussed more often.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a young Latina breast cancer survivor under 30, and I felt very alone at the beginning of my journey. It was difficult for me to find a community, podcast, blogs of young women my age battling breast cancer. Let alone; I’ve never heard of stories of young women, especially in my culture, going through breast cancer, and I wanted to change that. Since battling breast cancer, I felt that my purpose in life is to create a supportive community for young women who have been affected by breast cancer. In addition, my mission is to bring awareness of this disease to young women to be in tune with their bodies and detect early signs of breast cancer.
After my surgery to remove the cancerous tumor, I got a sign from the universe to start a podcast. Since receiving this sign, the podcast was born. I found my co-host, Shauna, through a Facebook support group, and together we recorded Season 1 in real-time while we were both going through active treatment (in different states). Starting a podcast is complex and requires a lot of work behind the scenes, such as planning, prepping, editing, to name a few. It is scary when you launch your first episode, especially when you haven’t shared your cancer story with the world, but it gets easier each time you air an episode. Lastly, when I plan for each episode, I’ve learned to ask myself this question: “does this topic or person provide value to young women in this community?”
I have enjoyed the podcast world and am looking forward to launching Season 2 later this year!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shout-out to my family, friends & partner for believing in my passion project and riding along with me on this new journey. For always supporting my decisions and understanding how important it is to share my story, provide a community for young women battling breast cancer, and build awareness + education on this disease that affects one in eight women every year.
