We had the good fortune of connecting with Rosamaria Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rosamaria, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always been a natural performer. When I was a teenager, there were not that many people in my circle who pursued music in higher education or as a career. However, when I did discover what music looked like as an older college student I was able to relate the knowledge I gathered from watching my father run his business, and quickly saw there were many opportunities for myself that I could create and follow through.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Opera is such a special art form. I am encouraged to be as loud and expressive as I can be. Often times women and young girls are expected to behave and conform to what is most ideal to those around them. What sets me apart is that I am an honest artist and I give myself fully to the music I perform. I am always ready for challenges and to be part of a team that takes on those challenges together. I am the most proud of my role debut as the Countess Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro by W.A. Mozart with Santa Monica College. I am also very proud of the very first recital we put on as “Voces de Amarilis” back in November 2024. Both of those experiences were the biggest leaps of faith I have taken as an opera singer. I am also proud of when and how I started my journey to become a professional musician, which dates back to Fall of 2018. It has taken so much dedication and discipline to be the musician I am today. It has not been easy, but it has been rewarding thus far. I have constantly reminded myself of the importance of my work. I know I am a very privileged individual to be able to juggle many jobs and dedicate myself to my craft. I am especially thankful that I have support and courage to have a different professional and personal life than many woman from my family in past generations. I have had to work really hard and countless jobs and hours to be able to sustain myself. I have learned the importance of being prepared and being reliable. If you stay prepared, you will always be ready for a job, and manage nerves easier. I am an opera singer who has so much to say and share. I value my friendships, disciple, and honesty. My dream is to perform for many crowds in as many cities as possible so that I can share as much knowledge with the next generation of opera singers. I also want to see more opera singers come out of East Los Angeles and Boyle Heights. It is my mission to build community that carries on generations and passes down the importance of honesty and discipline.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to grab breakfast with me at Picaresca on Evergreen and 4th. They have the coziest sitting area and the most delicious lattes and breakfast foods! We would then take a short drive down to St. Mary’s church on 4th and chicago, to have fun singing in their dreamy space. They have an organ and tall dome shaped ceilings. We would then go shopping! I love getting lost in the clothing racks and trying on new dresses and hand bangs or even look at new shades of lipstick and blushes. On a separate day I would have to take them to listen to live music outdoors at Downtown Disney. They usually have the best local musicians and we could pick up some yummy treats. On another evening, I would have to make sure I took them to a candlelight concert. Every time I’ve gone with a friend, we always come out having heard amazing arrangements of our favorite songs or artists.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe a huge thank you to my voice sisters: Hadassah Meneses and Bianca Galicia for pushing me and allowing me to grow into my voice through our project “Voces de Amarilis”. I owe another huge thank you to Lori Stinson for being my voice teacher from 2018 until now. Through her instruction I have been able to lock in my technique and be fearless when using my voice. Thank you to East Los Angeles College for having a tight knit music department and educators who continue to show their support long after you graduate. Thank you to all my friends and especially my family who have shown their support and more importantly have given me so much love throughout this journey.
