We had the good fortune of connecting with Rose Avakian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rose, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Sustainability is still very much underrated! My passion for sustainability, along with my love for the solar industry, led me to starting OneSun, a local solar panel installation company based out of Los Angeles. We operate on the basis of making solar affordable and accessible to our local communities, so that the positive sustaniable and economical impacts can be maximized. We educate homeowners and businesses about the benefits of solar panels, and design customized solutions to serve each property’s unique needs. Solar panels reduce strain on the grid and are a source of clean and sustainable electricity, which plays a tremendous role into decreasing our community’s carbon footprint and combating climate change. Especially as electric vehicles and appliances become more prominent, a clean energy source is crucial. Alongside the environmental aspects, there are significant economic benefits to installing solar panels. With solar panels, homeowners and businesses are able to slash their electricity bills, which ultimately saves each homeowner or business thousands of dollars on electricity. For the highest consumers, we’re talking six figures worth of savings over the system lifetime! With solar panels, homeowners and businesses alike are also protected from future utility rate hikes and have ownership of their energy. There are other financial perks to installing solar panels such as an expected increase in property value, and for those who are eligible, a 30% federal tax credit. At OneSun, our goal is to drive the adoption of solar panels further, in order to allow a cleaner and more economical future for our local communities.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I fell into the solar industry by chance after completing my Bachelor’s degree, and it did not take long at all for me to realize that I ended up exactly where I needed to be! I was one of those students in university who felt very uncertain about what my ideal long-term career path would be, because I wanted to do so much but knew I couldn’t do it all. However what I did know was that I wanted to do something that made a positive impact to our world, no matter how big or how small. After working in operations and project management at a few different companies in the solar sector, it was clear to me that my next best step would be starting my own solar business and streamlining solar panel installations for our local comminities.
Getting to where I am today was definitely not easy. There were many long and relentless hours, challenges, and obstacles. However, I’ve learned that anything can be achieved and overcome with resilience and self-determination. Any trade in construction tends to get chaotic at times, and establishing a postive work-life balance has helped me tremendously and keeps me at my best performance! I’ve learned to maintain a positive mindset even in the midst of obstacles, and the most important thing I’ve recognized is that integrity goes a long way. It’s one of my biggest values, and instilling it into the way I operate my business has been nothing short of fulfilling.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would show them all sides of LA since there is a niche for everything here! As someone who was born and raised in the SFV, I would start by taking them to Ventura Boulevard in Studio City and hitting up Kazunori, one of my favorite sushi joints (seriously, their handrolls are the best) and checking out different local shops and boutiques. I would also take them to Brews Brothers in the NoHo Arts District, one of my favorite spots for a fun night of billiards, delicious smoked meat, and good wine! As a nature enthusiast, I would also drive us into the Angeles Crest and hit up the Switzer Falls trail, a beautiful and serene hike that makes it seem like you’re not even in LA. Downtown Manhattan Beach is also a must to visit, summer sunsets there are magical.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It’s difficult to pinpoint one specific person as I have been very fortunate to be surrounded by a strong support system since day 1. With that being said, I will mention a few people. Firstly, I want to give a shoutout to my mom, dad, and loved ones for their unwavering support over the years. They have listened to my successes and failures alike, and have always been a source of wisdom and reassurance I know I can count on. I also want to give a shoutout to my top two field colleagues, Milton and Eugene. I have worked alongside them since the start of my solar career as a fresh college gradutate, and they have been great partners and mentors to me since the beginning. Their diligence and strong work ethic has always inspired and motivated me.
