We had the good fortune of connecting with Roy Kim and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Roy, what do you want people to remember about you?
I immediately gravitated to this question because my entire business is based on this question. It’s the reason why I called my business “New Legacy Counseling.” I believe in redemption. I believe that we can rewrite our life story. Whether young or old, we can completely change how people remember us. Personally, I want my legacy to be that of someone who used every bit of his life to bring healing and empowerment to others. I want people to remember me not just for the things I do well, or for the things I curate, hoping that people will not see my weaknesses and darkness. Rather, I want people to know my shameful side, and in turn be inspired and freed to share their own shameful side. Only then can there be a path to redemption and healing.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have a private therapy practice that focuses on helping those with sexual addictions or betrayal trauma. I am most proud seeing the impact my service has on those who felt hopeless, lost and devastated. The name of my practice is New Legacy Counseling, and I see my clients writing new legacies all the time. I got to this point in my business by being ok with making mistakes. It’s by making the wrong decisions that I learn what the better decisions are. I would like the world to know that the majority of people have compulsive sexual behaviors that they are ashamed of, and hardly anyone is talking about it. I want to open those communication lines and see suffering people get real help.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Broad Museum is an architectural wonder, both inside and out. Nearby in downtown Los Angeles, there is a beautiful bar and restaurant called Faith and Flower. You have to try their cocktails. Koreatown has wonderful hole in the wall spots. I especially like HanBat for their Sullungtang bone broth soup.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate this Shoutout to my wife Jenn Hsu. She is my safe place and my life companion. She accepts me for who I am, and supports me in who I want to be. In a cool way, she too helps people’s mental health. She’s a force when it comes to organizing. My hope is that one day she will leverage her organizing skills into a career that helps people’s mental health by decluttering!
