We had the good fortune of connecting with Roy Lucian Baza and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Roy Lucian, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I have to say I haven’t reached the level of success that I know I can and will reach. But honestly, based off of the success that I do have/ achieved thus far, I have to say, it’s my drive and determination to spread joy and bring love to those who need it most. Via the memories that will stick with me for life, living and breathing though the lyrics of my songs.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think by now my backstory is all over the internet. We all know I’m the boy who got diagnosed with Glaucoma at 19 years old. Had my world taken from me, as I traded music for 7 major eye surgeries and hundreds of days of treatment. Then I got hit by a car in 2019, and nearly died. I think what sets me apart is clear, and always at the forefront of who I am as an artist. I’ve been saying this a lot lately, all the pains of my past has gotten me to where I am today professionally. Without my complex history, I wouldn’t have the guts, drive, and determination to stand up and stand out via my art. The “Roy” album brought back a lot of the pain from my earlier days, and while that may be apart of my history, I also choose to find the joy within the sadness. You can find happiness even when things aren’t the brightest. Stepping into my Loverboy Lucian era, it became my sole goal and duty to spread love and bring joy to people via my music. I want whatever audience that discovers me and my work to feel uplifted in all the ways they have needed. My brand is pink and yellow skies, and finding the joy, even long after the fact.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Malibu. Straight up, Malibu. I live in Malibu part time. It’s my safe space, my happy place, and the place I can breathe a sigh of relief. I’m always down to go to the country mart. I love Sunlife, we can get an açaí bowl. If we’re feeling like a burger or something more savory, I frequent at Mutts a lot. Then head down to the beach. Zuma is great, Point dume, all the standards. I spend most of my free time by the water anyways. Also love a good hike through the backbone. And if we’re headed toward Calabasas, we have to make a stop at Erewhon. I’m sorry, I know, lol. But I’m a huge fan, and love their hot bar and smoothies. Have ya’ll tried that Laura Harvey one yet? FIRE.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s many moving pieces to my complex story and journey. But as of right now in my Loverboy Lucian era, I have to say the mentorship and brotherhood from my producer Ben Wilkins, and my band, The Loverboys (Michael Abrams & Michael Cloutier), have made the biggest impact. Going from my vastly different debut album, “Roy”, into my sophomore album, “Loverboy Lucian”, brought HUGE changes to my life. Ben and I stepped it up on all fronts writing and creating this body of work. From the 10 songs on the standard edition, to the 3 new original Christmas songs on “Loverboy Lucian: The Ho Ho Ho Edition” releasing on November 15th, it just keeps refueling my soul with added joy. It’s been a year of major growth. And I’m lucky I’ve also had my loverboys to lean on as everything continues evolving.
