We had the good fortune of connecting with Royal Binion and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Royal, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always loved creating. Ever since I could remember I’ve had a camera in my hand or was singing. I started as a singer/ songwriter. Signed to a few labels back in the day. I got a scholarship for theater at FAMU but left early to move to Los Angeles and pursue my dreams. I then got into modeling and did that for sometime in LA, NY, and Hong Kong. Modeling taught me so much behind the scenes of how to bring visions to life and make images pop. I started to shoot images of my friends and models and actors I’ve come in contact with which propelled my career into being a full time photographer.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Hello, my name is Royal Binion. I am a professional fashion/ beauty/ commercial photographer here in Los Angeles. I am also a painter, and Creative Director. My journey has been a very interesting one. I started out in front of the camera, modeling and acting, but my love for creating was always there. I’ve always had a camera in my hands and was usually shooting pictures of myself, friends and family. I have been fortunate to work with some of the biggest names in the industry. I’ve always worked hard, and always led with my creative spirit over the need of being paid the most money. If I felt passionate about a photoshoot, or project that would intrigue me more than a bigger check would. I would want the world to know that I am a man of many hats and refuse to be put in boxes. I am truly led by my creative spirit and it’s a freedom to be able to do that.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have lived in LA for over 20 years and have had many friends and family come out here. I used to take them to all the hottest clubs without standing in lines, and bottle service, hanging out with the hottest celebrities at the time. But now, although my clubbing days have dwindled down I will take them to breakfast or brunch at Little Dom’s in Los Feliz. Hike Griffith or Runyon, Sushi at Wabi on Rose, drinks at SoHo house, or San Vicente Bungalows. Always a good time

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this shout out to my family. They are the reason I work so hard. They give me the motivation to get up everyday and create. My amazing wife gives me the freedom and encouragement to pursue my dreams. Her support means the world to me. She uplifts me and truly wants me to succeed in every aspect of my life. I couldn’t ask for a better half.
