We had the good fortune of connecting with Rushie Perera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
TV and Film was such an important part of my life growing up in Australia. I escaped into the worlds and experiences of people who might not have always looked like me but were going through something or feeling things I was feeling in my little part of the world back in Melbourne. Eventually I wanted to create those worlds myself. I would write long novels in high school, handing out chapters at a time to my classmates who would devour them and give me their input in real time. Then I moved onto screenplays, forcing my friends to play characters in a slasher film or teen rom com. And when I look back on that time one thing is clear, I’ve always had a strong support system that was willing to entertain these fantastical dreams – from my parents who bought me my first camera to my friends who stood outside shivering in the cold just so I could get that final shot right. So whenever I’m navigating the twists and turns of this town I remind myself it’s not just my dream but OUR dream and they’re all with me every step of the way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I get a lot of Aussies from back home coming to LA to visit me so I use that opportunity to try new stuff while also taking them on a tour of my regular haunts. Brunch on the weekend is at Millies on Sunset. After all these years no one does it better. Feel like just one single pancake? They got you. If the weather’s good we’ll head to the beach to watch the whole day go by with some snacks and good music by our side. Karaoke in K-Town is a must with some 90s RnB bangers lined up. And you’ll always find me at a concert whether is a smaller venue like The Wiltern or an arena like The Forum – we’re so lucky that everyone comes through LA when they’re on tour. Dinner at Ruen Pair for the best Thai Food in LA. Silverlake, Echo Park, Los Feliz and Downtown LA have some of my fave restaurants so depending on our mood we’ll be crossing off the next new spots to try out. And finally, sitting outdoors on Larchmont Blvd with a hot drink and something sweet to snack on while we people watch.
