We had the good fortune of connecting with Ruthie Odom and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ruthie, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
My community is most responsible for my success. If I hadn’t had the opportunity to work with many amazing guides, mentors, teachers, parents, and friends, then I would not be where I am today. Any one person’s success is usually built and cultivated by an army of people behind them, so for my army, I thank you.
Joy. Joy is the key to my success. I think if there was no joy in what I was doing, then I wouldn’t be very successful. I used to have this idea that success was only linked to material wealth or accomplishment. Now I’ve learned that my wealth and external achievements don’t matter at all if I have no internal achievement. You can have all the nice things, but the value of your life cannot be measured by those nice things. Don’t get me wrong, nice things are great! But they don’t define me. Any success in my life that you may see on the outside, is an expression of the joy and inner stability I have been able to build on the inside. Not the other way around.
First, I had to reorient my relationship to success and own the definition. I had to ask, “ What does success actually mean to me? How will I know when I have obtained it? What I want to feel as a direct result of my success?” So Number 1, owning the definition. What does success actually mean to me? How will I know when I have obtained it? What do I want to feel as a direct result of my success? Its easy to live in this world and never take time to define what these terms mean to us, the individual actually doing this dang thing called life! It’s easy to allow this big cultural idea of “success” to loom over you, or consciously or subconsciously dictating your choices, without ever pausing and asking if you actually feel successful. If you don’t define success for yourself, then who is defining it for you? And how will you know if you reached it?
Second, I had to consider the tangible, measurable results. It’s not enough to just reclaim the idea of success, but I had to take action on that idea. I needed a structure to help me know if I was actually meeting my own markers of success. A lot of my training in the Modern Mystery School provided that structure for me and helped me reach my goals. Goals are important. They are a measure of your desire and will. We need to accomplish things in the world to help us know ourselves, and what we are capable of. But again, achieving that goal should be a fun adventure of self-knowledge and not self-torture.
So community, joy, and really getting to know myself have been paramount to my success. Being able to take a desire, put it into action, and have a system to test the value of my actions, are why I have been successful. I love my life and I love serving people in my community. For me, success is bout substance. And if there is no substance behind what I am doing.. then what am I actually doing?
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
How did I get to where I am today professionally? God only knows. If you think I was a little kid, dreaming of becoming a spiritual guide, you are sadly mistaken. I went to theater school and law school. I in no way anticipated the path that I am currently on, but I sure am glad about how it all panned out.
SO I am a spiritual guide with my own practice in Long Beach, California. I offer lineage-based healings and workshops, as well as around the clock coaching to help my clients achieve greater personal success. I recently started my own production company to film stories that I love. I am striving to be a modern-day renaissance woman because I don’t think your passions have to be limited. If you create the container and take action, then your dreams can most certainly come true.
How I got here is simple. I was suffering. I struggled with a slew of mental health issues and issues of identity. And that suffering led me to seek. I started seeking a way to heal. And ultimately, after working with yoga, studying every religion I could, trying all the psychedelics, and worshipping crystals… to no avail, I found the Modern Mystery School and everything changed.
Through the path of the Modern Mystery School, I completely transformed from the inside out. I healed things I never thought possible. And now, I have the honor of using these tools to help others all over the world… I am lucky.
What sets me apart from others is that I am probably the most surprising spiritual guide you may ever meet. I keep things very real. I am honest. I am committed to grounded solutions backed by hermetic understanding. I stay far away from any sort of spiritual stereotype. I do not believe everything is love and light. I do not believe that one book has all the answers. I know that spiritual health is vital to living a whole and joyful life. I know that spiritual health is not a one-solution fix, but requires a path of transformation and continued work. I also know that there are fewer and fewer options for a grounded, intelligent approach to spirituality that can actually yield lasting results. Thats where I come in.
The work that I do is backed by lineage. Meaning, I do not make up my own content. I am trained and certified, to offer advanced healing techniques that have been tested for hundreds, if not thousands of years. I am trained in ancient modalities that help shift my clients on all levels. Some of the results include healthier relationships, clarity of purpose, healing of insecurities, anxiety, and depression, as well as an overall greater sense of well-being.
I stand apart because of the lineage I work with. I stand apart because I am not going to try to sell you an illusion. Life is challenging. It just is. We have to be equipped with the proper tools to handle the tests of life. If you are not equipped with proper knowledge, tools, or guidance, you may find yourself drowning in a world you cannot make sense of.
From my own struggles of addiction, anxiety, depression, self-loathing, apathy, anger, obsessive thinking, and immense inner turmoil, I have learned a path of healing out of all of these things. I have learned how to step into the greater version of myself and out of those hells. Healing is possible. Healing the mind is possible. You don’t have to stay stuck where you are at. You can grow. I guide people along the path of lasting change, so that they can live free and accomplish what they desire. I have done this for myself, and therefore, I can help others.
If there is one thing I strive to imbue in all my clients, Its this:
Anything is possible, but how committed are you to seeing what is possible? There is hope for a better life, but without challenging the ego, going outside the comfort zone, and committing to yourself above all else, you may not see it.
So for those who are committed to creating that better life, I guide them. I am a Guide in the Modern Mystery School, and I help people. Everything else I do is an expression of the things I love. And my hope for the world, is that everyone gets to express what they love and know the joy of that.
I have documentary series being released about the work of the Modern Mystery School. The first episodes are out now. You can view them on my website at ruthieodom.com
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Angeles is a Mecca of wonder if you know where to look!
First shout out for food is Crack Burger in Long beach on the Bixby Village Golf Course. This may be the best burger you have ever had in your life. This guy is a wizard, so if you are in Southern LA County, you have to go! The entire meal may cost you $15 if you pay in cash, so you can’t beat it.
Favorite nature spot is definitely Huntington Gardens. The Japanese, Chinese, and Rose gardens are so, so beautiful. If you want to get lost in a stunning outdoors setting, this is your place. Highly recommended for Romantic strolls.
If you are into the finer things and love great tea, then check out Tea Habitat. You can set up a tea tasting there and drink some of the purest, Chinese tea. Seriously, you are looking at some of the finest sourced tea available in the United States and this place is a hole in the wall, so make sure to set up an appointment.
I am a blonde, female, spiritual guide, so I definitely love hiking. If you want to see some beautiful trails, check out Malibu Creek State Park up north or Abalone Cove at Rancho Palos Verdes. Both areas are stunning- just depends if you want ocean or mountains.
Love film, so we have to see a movie! Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Downtown LA is awesome! They will serve food and drinks at your seat. Food is great. Vibe is fun and hip. So if you want dinner and a movie, go here.
If you find yourself in Santa Monica and do want to buy that cute crystal buddy for yourself, go to Thunderbolt Spiritual Books. I am actually a bit of snob when it comes to spiritual stores, but this is one of my favorites. Good energy. Great Products. Kind Staff.
If you want to continue to have a magical hobbit adventure, head up to Topanga Canyon and book a table at the Inn of the 7th Ray. Definitely the most magical brunch experience I have had, and all there food is organic. What can beat that?
Would most definitely attend any one of the Korean Sauna’s in LA. If you are traveling from out of town and seeking affordable relaxation, look no further. Wi spa is a fan favorite in LA, but ISPA in Orange County also has my heart.
Other food loves would be Saint & Second Long Beach. Chef forward and cool brewery vibe. BCD Tofu House in Koreatown, for late night Sundubu. And that taco stand in front of Ralph’s Grocery store on 4th st, Long Beach. Can’t beet homemade tortillas and a solid LA street taco!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My greatest, personal mentor is Dave Lanyon. No one in this world has helped me grow more. He is one of the wisest teachers I have ever had the honor of working with, and I cannot endorse him enough, along with Gudni Gudnason and Hideto Nakagome. These three men are masters in their field, and I am lucky to train with them.
I am certified to teach through the Modern Mystery School, and my community within that school has been nothing but an absolute joy in my life. This organization has supported my personal development in ways you cannot imagine, and I continue to have an outstanding relationship with them today.
Shoutout to Emerson College in Boston and all my professors who paved the way for me to be a free thinker! These teachers initiated my personal dedication to what I call “radical service.” A few of those professors are Christina Marin, Sarah Hickler, Billie Jo Joy, Ken Cheeseman, Diana Sherry, Bethany Nelson, Amelia Broome, Sunil Swaroop, Mirta Tocci, Andrew Clarke, Eric Weiss, Amissa Miller, and Nancy Finn.
Huge shoutout to Nick Gant, who opened the door to all things film. That guy believed in me when I was just a dopey kid, so he deserves props because without him I’m not sure if I would have followed my dreams in film.
To my great friends, Zuyapa Jackson, Rachel Miller, and Austyn Davis. Thank you for your love and patience.
And last but never the least my parents, Dr. John Odom and Dr. Connie Tambakis-Odom. Without them, I would never have had the courage and determination that I do today. I love you both.
