We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Luis Fuller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ryan Luis, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I first realized my love for filmmaking in middle school with the realization that most independent films I had been watching online were not playing in my local movie theaters. There are so many stories that are not told by the mainstream media that are still never or barely being shown. I never had the idea of being an artist for the role of a career or a way to make ends meet or a call to fame. This was something that was passionate for me and something that was guttural. I never thought I would say now I am a filmmaker, documentarian, field recordist, musician, and DJ.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I find myself most inspired in my art work by an abundance of history related from the past to present, life and death. A lot of my films are about sexual health and being queer. I find stories related to my experience most exhilarating. Right now, I am most excited to have my first narrative short ‘Straight from the Throat’ premiere at Sex Education Film Festival in Barcelona, Spain. As a musician, I am working on my second score for a dance film expected to release later this year. As a documentarian I find myself capturing field recordings around the world and in personal spaces to highlight the importance of archive and my time being alive. As a DJ, I love shaking a room with soundscapes and then transporting into a deep dance. None of this is ever easy as I work a separate full time job in retail. I find myself balancing work, life, art, and relationships a constant battle but knowing that this is what keeps me going inspires me most. Without my art, I would have no identity or sense of self.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Los Angeles, I would love to go to my favorite banh mi spot Be U in Virgil Village, also the vegan Vietnamese iced coffee is to die for.
And then would go to my favorite bookstore Other Books.
Depending on the day, I would love to visit a nice park like Vista Hermosa Park.
At night if there is an event happening I wouldn’t mind dancing the night away at an underground rave.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
