We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Wang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite quote is “First learn to be a craftsman; it won’t keep you from being a genius.” It emphasizes the importance of mastering the foundational skills of one’s craft before striving for brilliance. In my journey as an editor, mastering the basics—whether it’s understanding editing software, cutting theories, or refining color correction—lays a solid foundation upon which creative genius can flourish.
I’ve encountered many who believe that art has nothing to do with regulations or theories and insist that rules are meant to be broken. However, I think every successful artist, regardless of their field, has a solid understanding of basic skills, which allows them to achieve further success.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is driven by a deep passion for storytelling and a commitment to creating emotionally resonant works. As an editor and filmmaker, what sets me apart is my dedication to mastering the foundational skills of my craft, combined with a relentless pursuit of creative innovation. I am most proud of the projects where I have been able to connect with audiences on a profound level and contribute positively to cultural enrichment.
Professionally, I started from scratch after graduating from university, teaching myself the intricacies of film editing. It was far from easy; the transition involved abandoning my previous field and facing numerous challenges. I overcame these obstacles through perseverance, a willingness to learn, and the support of mentors and peers. During this period of learning editing, I also developed a great interest in color grading, which also led me to work as a professional commercial colorist.
Along the way, I’ve learned the importance of effective communication, time management, and the value of a solid understanding of basic skills. These lessons have shaped me into a dedicated and creative editor.
Through my work as an editor and filmmaker, I aim to leave behind a body of work that resonates emotionally and contributes positively to the world. I hope to be remembered for my dedication to storytelling and my expertise as a film editor. It would be great if my work could inspire future artists and filmmakers to pursue their passions fearlessly and with purpose.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting me for a week, I would ensure they experience the unique blend of natural beauty. I might take them to Joshua Tree to spend the day. We would start our mornings with hikes in Joshua Tree National Park, exploring iconic rock formations and trails—a healthy way to begin each day. Afternoons would be spent browsing local art galleries and shops in Joshua Tree Village or exploring other interesting spots in Palm Springs. Evenings would include dining at cozy local restaurants or bars, enjoying delicious food, and the night view. It’s a week filled with outdoor adventures, artistic inspiration, and unforgettable desert vistas.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wanted to take a moment to extend my thanks to all the professors, faculty, and classmates at Dodge College for your support and guidance. The knowledge and experiences I’ve gained have been invaluable, and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from such talented and inspiring individuals.
