We had the good fortune of connecting with Salonica Hunter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Salonica, how do you define success?
Success is freedom. I believe that humans innately yearn to experience life from different perspectives and the ability to do so is true freedom. As an artist, the opportunity for me to create work that depicts different human experiences is a way for me to free people who may not be exposed to various ways of existing and thriving. My freedom to create or contribute to artistic expression is my personal success.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love to translate ancient stories into modern language so that the audience can better relate to the times and perspectives of the characters. I love to simplify complex ideas and build metaphors around them. I am most proud of my ability to exhibit a high level of authenticity in my work. I have been able to build on my strengths by reading the work of some well-known writers and film critics in order to bridge the knowledge gap that was present before I devoted myself to studying the craft. With that being said, I’ve also learned that art is not formulaic and that there is no real wrong way to create. I do, however, stand by the idea that work that has been invested in cleverly and with heart is more respected.
I think it is nice to know that my personal story is a story of redefining identity, exercising faith, and erasing limitations – something the world will find relatable, inspirational, and humorous.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Living in LA has greatly contributed to the inspiration of my art. I almost always find hiking to be very freeing and enlightening. Malibu’s El Matador beach is my happy place and I tend to share it with my friends who visit me. Museums are also hot spots to me so stopping by CAAM is a must.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am truly grateful to all of the various stakeholders in my career accomplishments. Thank you to every professional within my LinkedIn network who has passed along opportunities, given me resume feedback, or simply clicked the like button on my posts in order to increase my industry exposure.
