We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Birchenough and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sam, what do you attribute your success to?
There’s a few things.. most importantly (and most cliché) is never giving up. I’ve had my share of ups and downs over the last seven years BRCHN Design House. If you don’t give up, you can’t fail.

Continually learning is important. Early on, I had more time than money. I used that time to learn all aspects of building business. At the time, this afforded me the ability to save a lot of money by doing instead of outsourcing. The long-term value is having a deeper understanding of roles and talent sets that I might now leverage the talent of others for.

Trends, tools, technology, needs, and opportunities change. Much of my time is spent staying current on these things and forecasting what’s to come. The world moves quickly, ever so slightly ahead of the curve is a good place to be.

Toolsets & skills can all be learned relatively easily. The hardest, but most valuable thing: maintaining creativity. The more time you spend in the world, the harder it is to not become accustomed to the normalcies & implied constraints of life. It takes conscience effort and exercise in a wide variety of activities to keep the mind free. As time goes on, one gains experience, but loses innocence to societal norms. The area beneath these curves is where the advantage lies in meaningful problem solving.

What should our readers know about your business?
In 2015, I launched BRCHN Design House with the goal of propelling the product development industry years forward by redefining the concept-to-market design process.

Early on, we built relationships with technology leaders, providing us with the latest in design software & hardware. We’ve combined these toolsets with outside the box thinking to develop a vastly more efficient process when compared to traditional industry standards. As a boutique design firm, we run four projects at a time; usually no less or more. The result is 70+ world class designs delivered to happy clients in consumer products, consumer packaged goods, medical, dental, transportation, furniture, and entertainment.

It wasn’t easy! It took A LOT of time & work. If the goal was purely financial, I wouldn’t have ever made it far. I truly believed there was a better way to design & develop physical products. The biggest reward is the knowledge, experience, and learnings I’ve gained. The money is a byproduct.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I lived in downtown for 10 years & loved it. Zinc in the arts district for lunch. Any DTLA rooftop for sunset.

I’m in weho now. Joe & the juice on melrose for a power shake. Olivetta for dinner. The 1hotel for some backgammon.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Family, friends, and all those who encourage & believe in me.
