Meet Sam Clark | Film director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Clark and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sam, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Most people forget that the film industry is called an industry for a reason. It’s not just about the art. It’s also about marketing and selling an idea that the public wants to see.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a film writer and director, and I’m currently working on building my first original franchise. What makes my films stand out from the rest, or at least I try to have this mindset, is that while most other independent or student filmmakers focus on making a single film without considering a larger narrative, I always try to build a world for my stories to take place in. Worldbuilding is one of my favorite aspects of being a writer/director. Whenever I write a film, I try to think what other kind of stories I could tell in that universe, whether it’s a prequel or a sequel, a spinoff, or anything that can expand the story beyond a standalone film.
Some of the biggest challenges with with approach to filmmaking come from financing. Obviously with big franchises, there are massive studios behind them that can support them with large amounts of funding. But for me, it’s always a challenge to figure out how to make my films seem huge, but still keep them cost-effective. I specialize on making big, expensive-looking films on a shoestring budget. Hopefully that changes soon, but that’s how I’ve managed to get as far as I have in my profession.
My next film is called Heaven’s Edge and we’ve recently started pre-production, as well as an extensive ad campaign. I’m super excited for this project that’s been in the works for over five years. It’s my hope that this film will be a game changer for independent filmmakers everywhere.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Probably to a bunch of different movie theaters. Also filming locations from some of my favorite movies.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents and God
