Meet Sam Ramirez | Exclusion Specialist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Ramirez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sam, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
After working as a carpenter for many years and taking directions from my foreman/boss I started to notice that my opinions/suggestions were not being taken seriously even though it helped the company financially and efficiently. After doing humane pest control after work and on the weekends, I wanted to take that chance to see what I was capable of on my own. Many years later, here I am with a very successful company that serves two purposes. Me being able to use my carpentry skills to do repairs, as well as helping these animals find their way out of the home in a safe manner. I knew after this point I found my purpose and the need with many people struggling with their wildlife problems.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The thing that I’m most excited about is the ability to bring knowledge and education to those who don’t know any better. Many people are brought up knowing traditional trapping, which are old methods that are no longer effective. Even if they do not use my services, I’ll know I’ve helped change someone’s perspective on how they view rodents and the world. By using the skills that I learned being a carpenter, I put them to better use by helping my clients exclude animals from their home. It was not easy and many times I failed before I could get it right, but if I could do it all over again, I definitely would. As a carpenter you are always taught to think ahead and always find a way to make your job easier, faster, and more efficient. I put those same methods to practice while doing humane exclusion. To this day, I still learn new tricks that will help make me a better exclusion specialist.
Some lessons I’ve learned along the way are to listen to others and their concerns, patience with myself and others, and to always be ready for the unexpected. If you assume something is going to be easy, it usually isn’t.
The number one thing that I would like people to know that there is no need to deal with any wildlife conflict lethally (unless someone’s life is in danger). People think it’s easier and cheaper to just exterminate rodents, but realistically you’re only causing more problems in the long run for yourself and the neighbors around you. As a matter of fact, my services probably end up being cheaper than most of the companies out there. We focus on how these animals are making their way into the house or building, instead of just trapping whatever may be roaming outside of your home, which doesn’t make sense. If you set a trap up outside, you are likely to catch something other than what you are attempting to catch. With our methods it’s almost fail proof and by controlling the situation you will get the desired results, as long as you are willing to put in the effort.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being born and raised in California, enjoying the California sun at the beach is a must. You’ll find me often at the Redondo beach pier, as well as Manhattan beach. The daytime in Redondo beach is great and the nightlife in Manhattan beach is very fun, there are a lot of nice restaurants, bars, and good people. I like to enjoy a nice juicy steak at Frankie’s on Melrose, best steak in town in my opinion. I also find myself at a lot of animal events, where I meet a lot of animal lovers which once they hear about what I do they’re amazed by it and want to know more. I enjoy outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, and bicycling. There are so many beautiful places to enjoy these outdoor actives in Los Angeles.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
That would have to be the person who introduced me to this industry, Rebecca Dmydryk. She is the owner and founder of Humane Wildlife Control. Without her I would probably still be in the construction field, in the hot blistering sun. Instead, I’m actually making a difference in the world and in people’s lives who care deeply about the animals. I also want to give credit to my closest friends and family who supported me through the struggles and difficult times. They were always there for me through thick and thin.
