We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Laverty-Lavoie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Resilience. So far in my professional career, I have had to reinvent myself three times. After moving to Los Angeles from Montreal and living in the city for a year, I lost my job in sales & marketing and transitioned to coaching in the fitness world. This opportunity fell into my lap when the owners of the gym I worked at asked me to become a coach for their bootcamp classes. I have a passion for sport and fitness and thought… why not? I then met a friend who gave me wings by opening a door into the private aviation industry. I had frankly never considered such a career choice before. I was accepted into the position and worked from the bottom up, starting with the grunt work of restocking aircrafts. This was helpful towards understanding the nuts and bolts of how to prep the planes. A few months later, I was a fully trained flight attendant for private jets and thus began a new chapter in my life.

Then COVID19 hit. The travel industry essentially came to a screeching halt, and I had to reinvent myself again. This time I returned to my roots in the marketing world, taking online classes on Search Engine Optimization and website building and design. And now, since September 2020, I have been juggling the two exciting worlds of a digital marketing specialist and a contract flight attendant.

It has definitely been challenging at times, such as keeping up with marketing clients in the USA while in Kenya for a contract aviation trip! Without resilience, determination, and a strong will to succeed, I would not be where I am today.

I have found the perfect mix that suits my personality: the creative and intellectually challenging work on the marketing side combined with the dynamic and lively stimulation of the aviation world. It provides me with a sense of purpose and feelings of accomplishment as I am thriving on both fronts, for now.

Alright, so please tell us more about your career and what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about, etc. Was it easy?
One thing that sets me apart from others is my unique French-Canadian-Irish-American upbringing. I was fortunate to travel internationally as a child and subsequently in my professional career, visiting 35 countries so far. I am bilingual (French, English) and have also lived in multiple countries, providing me with a diverse and unique perspective on life. This background has been the inspiration for my website sarasadventures.com.

Other factors contributing to the woman I am today include my black belt in Karate and participation in the Canadian Championship many years ago. I recently ran a half marathon and managed to fundraise 1.1K for the St. Judes Hospital in New Orleans in February 2022. Fitness is and also has been a massive part of my life.

If I am fully honest, I cannot say that getting to where I am today was easy. It was a combination of “blood, sweat, and tears” with a good dose of determination, lack of sleep, sacrifice, and a great support system. Sometimes I went 36 hours without sleep catering to celebrities’ needs, lugged 50-pound bedding up and down plane stairs, battled illness alone in hotel rooms, took online classes during Covid19 to get back into the Digital marketing industry, etc. A fun rollercoaster that led me to visit gorgeous corners of the planet and meet stunning human beings.

Some of my favorite go-to Mantras that helped me along the way include:
Life is what you make it.
You are STRONGER than you think.
The sky is the limit.*

*I joke about that last one with my mother and tease her that even the sky wasn’t the limit for me (about becoming a flight attendant on private jets and traveling the world).

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Of course, the main shoutout is to my parents. Without them, I would not be the strong, independent, resilient woman I am today. They showed me that anything and everything is possible with focus, determination, and good work ethics. They sent me to Karate classes at a very young age, and I believe now that the focussed and determined mindset I have today comes from that early training.

Brené Brown’s books have been a significant inspiration in my life in the last few years. It all began when I watched her Ted Talk on Vulnerability and read her books Daring Greatly and Rising Strong. In addition, her podcasts inspire me daily.
Here are some quotes that speak to me:
“Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity, and change.”
“Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen.”

Special mention also to my friends and colleagues who have supported and been there for me along my journey. Community is everything for me.
