We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Leeds and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
When I realized I needed to stop waiting for the “perfect” time, or for every detail to be perfectly worked out before trying something new. For someone like me who gets easily stuck in analysis paralysis, having a partner invested in my projects, to help me course correct and provide honest feedback along the way, is invaluable.

Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
The purpose of my art is to tell stories that make people feel happy and think differently.

I work full-time as a creative director, content creator, and producer. My most meaningful project to date is being the creator and host of Doorman Stories. I got to where I am professionally by making a huge career pivot from corporate (management consulting) to a fully creative path. It honored a younger version of myself true to who I really am that I think I ignored for way too long. It was and is not easy to work in a creative field and constantly feel the pull of comparing myself to others!

But I want fellow creatives to know that whatever you’re feeling, it’s undoubtedly a feeling many other people experience too. We’re far less alone than we think. I also want to share that the fear of wondering “what if” will always be greater than the fear of just going for it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
New York is a city that has something new even if you’ve lived here 50 years! A week here is just scratching the surface.

Some must do’s:
– A dinner outside at Via Carota
– Walking between the East and West side through Central Park
– A Sunday at The Grand Bazaar
– Getting Dim Sum in Chinatown
– A concert at Brooklyn Mirage
– Going to a speakeasy or live jazz show
– Visiting the MOMA, the Met, or another great museum
– Walk walk and walk some more

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to the New York City doormen who have donated their time and their stories to my series. The community I’ve forged would simply not exist without them.
