We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Seligman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As a filmmaker the only path is a very scary one; freelance. Most people in the film and TV industry have to decide to be OK with that financial and employment instability in exchange of wanting to follow our dreams.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started working in film and television in front of the camera when I was 16 years old, but I realized I was more interested in behind-the-camera work after a few years of being on set. Ever since I made that shift, I have had the opportunity to work in different aspects of production, serving as a Production Assistant on various types and sizes of films and TV shows. This has been incredibly helpful and so much fun. I have learned most of what I know and made amazing friends. I now focus on directing, producing, and writing. To me, being on set is the most fun and rewarding experience I can have, and I’m so grateful I get to do it!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love living in Los Angeles. I know the city gets a bad reputation, but it’s so big that I think everyone could find something they like if they gave it a shot.

I love living on the east side; it reminds me of Mexico a lot, and I love that I can find amazing Mexican street vendors with the best food and produce. You get the best mangos in the US from the street vendors. Make sure you get the small yellow mangos, not the large green/red ones.

When friends visit, depending on their interests, we might visit:
– Leo Carrillo Beach caves
– Pasadena Botanical Garden
– Museums
– Corn Man
– DTLA walking tour for amazing architecture starting at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and working our way to the Bradbury Building, Fine Arts Building, Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, The Grand LA, etc.
– Porto’s
– Monarca Bakery
– Olvera Street
– Venice Canals
– Magic Castle
– The Roosevelt Hotel

Granted, this is way more than a one-day itinerary!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe a tremendous thank you to a long list of people whose support has brought me to where I am now and will hopefully continue to fuel my growth.

There are individuals who believed in me and gave me the opportunity to tackle new jobs, which is always a gamble but essential for our success: Lauren, Chris, Debbie, Lorie, Courtney, Guillermo, Ricardo, Nikki, Syd, Auri, Marianne, Mattie, and many more!

Additionally, I am grateful to the funds and organizations that have supported me in various ways, including NALIP, Tribeca Film Institute, Film Independent, and Latino Filmmakers. The scholarship fund at NYFA allowed me to attend film school.

Special thanks to my producing partner, Tom, and to my friends and family for their unwavering moral support.
