We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Espinoza and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, how do you think about risk?
I started my own business because at the time I felt it was the only way to pursue a creative career. I had been working at a hotel, while also doing makeup on the side, mostly on weekends. I started to think to myself, is this it? Am I always going to be working all week long just to be able to do what I love on weekends only, which also left no personal time in between. I decided I had played it safe enough and that wasn’t going to cut it anymore, I had to start prioritizing my dream which was technically plan A as plan A instead of as plan B.

A huge part of my success and happiness is taking risk! The higher the risk the higher the reward. I think risk is only a fear we have in our minds and every time we take the risk, on the other side is growth and where you’re meant to be.

What should our readers know about your business?
I’m living my dream being a full time beauty content creator and i’m proud to be paving the way for my family, as a Latina, as a Woman, as a Creative, as an Entrepreneur.

Choosing a different life path from everyone you know is never easy and it honestly takes a lot of courage. I became pretty spiritual in 2017/2018 and asking myself existential questions about the purpose of life and what i’m here to do. It quickly became clear to me that what you put into the Universe you get out. So although it wasn’t an easy decision or journey, I felt it was the right thing to do and I would be rewarded for following my heart.

Persistence and patience are hard to maintain after years of putting it work with what feels like 0 outcome, but looking back now I realized I wasn’t ready for what I do now, so I had to go through the ups and downs, the experimenting phases, the creative burn outs, to really hone in on what it I truly love and feel i’m meant to do.

To overcome every challenge, I had to work on my mindset. I didn’t realize that not only did I have a lot to learn, but also a lot to unlearn, so many inner narratives I believed were true that I had just inherited.

My biggest challenge was covid 19 happening after my first year in business as a full time makeup artist. I basically had to trust the process and pivot my business into becoming a content creator. I can say it was definitely meant to happen, it led me to where I was meant to be. Glad I held out faith in whatever was meant to be.

A couple of lessons I learned along my journey are in order for others to believe in you, you have to believe in yourself first. and to truly flourish in life, you have to be willing to follow your heart and have faith that everything will work out if you stay true to yourself.

Although I do makeup content, I feel that it is actually just a vehicle for my true purpose, which is connecting with others and inspiring them to believe in themselves, never give up on their dreams no matter what age you are and to teach that confidence and beauty come from within and most times they come from struggle, an inner battle of choosing to be confident and feel beautiful even when you don’t.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Coming from the Bay Area I do feel a lot of the food here is overhyped, BUT there are so many places with fun vibes and one thing there is a lot of here is history and culture and I love that you can feel it almost everywhere!

I would take them to Met Her or Him at a Bar because the atmosphere and staff are super friendly and welcoming, it’s just so LA in my opinion. I would definitely take them to korean bbq, so far my favorite spot is Jjukku Jjukku BBQ and Olvera Street because I love the taquitos at Cielito Lindo.

For shopping, I would take them to Melrose because there’s a lot of cool thrift stores!

The amount of flea markets and Vintage markets is wild and that’s one thing I love about out here, so I would definitely take them to Long Beach or Santa Monica Vintage Markets and another really fun place is live Jazz at LACMA on Friday’s during the Summer!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shout out my partner, Russ Coson, for showing me what having a dream and pursuing it relentlessly looks like. Before him, I hadn’t seen anyone have a honest dream of doing something different from anyone I knew. He inspired me so much to find what makes me happy and to run with it!
