We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Kim (Rich Rebel Riah) and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, how has your work-life balance changed over time?

Working in LA has fundamentally shifted my perspective on work-life balance. As an audio engineer, music producer, and songwriter, I often find myself working through the night and juggling a hectic schedule. In my early career, I prided myself on regularly enduring sleep deprivation and irregular eating habits, believing it was part of paying my dues and putting in hard work and tears for the industry. However, this approach soon led to a decline in my physical health, prompting a critical reassessment of my lifestyle.

Realizing the importance of physical well-being in sustaining my career and creative output, I transitioned to a whole foods diet and began meal prepping. Regular gym visits also became an integral part of my routine. These lifestyle changes brought a newfound equilibrium, balancing my energy throughout the day, enhancing my mood, and sharpening my mental focus. This holistic improvement in my health has not only been a personal victory but has also translated into enhanced performance and creativity in my professional life.

Yet, achieving physical balance is just the beginning. I’m now venturing into the realm of spiritual balance, which involves cultivating open-mindedness, nurturing positive energy, and fostering mental wellness. This journey is about connecting deeper with myself and the world around me, exploring mindfulness practices, and embracing a lifestyle that aligns with my inner values. It’s a continual process of growth and learning, one that I believe is essential for anyone in a demanding and dynamic industry like ours.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe that my unwavering passion for every aspect of music creation sets my work apart. Whether crafting beats, writing songs, recording, or perfecting vocals, each process allows me to express my unique perspective of the world, imbuing my music with a distinct, personal touch.

Music has been my calling since childhood, and at 25, I’ve come to understand that this journey is more than just a career—it’s a lifelong pursuit of growth and mastery. Overcoming self-doubt, especially impostor syndrome, has been a pivotal part of this journey, strengthening my resolve and enhancing my artistry.

I’m currently excited to be working on my first personal album, taking on multiple roles such as producing, engineering, songwriting, and performing. This project marks a significant evolution of my brand, extending beyond traditional music production. It represents a key moment in my transition towards a lifestyle of balance, support, wellness, and success. This album isn’t just a creative venture; it’s a reflection of my personal and professional growth, encapsulating the lifestyle I promote and live by.

In sharing my story, my goal is to highlight the complexities of my journey, driven by relentless passion and a constant pursuit of personal development.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friend were visiting LA for a week, I’d plan an exciting itinerary filled with good food and a deep dive into the iconic music and entertainment scene unique to LA. Having lived in various cities and countries, I believe LA offers some of the most exceptional food. With that being said, the one spot I would definitely take my friend to is Baja California Tacos in Culver City, known for their famous $1.50 fish tacos on Wednesdays.

In terms of music and entertainment, we’d explore the Grammy Museum for an immersive look into music history and its greatest artists. Attending concerts at renowned venues would allow us to experience the city’s live music scene firsthand. We’d also seek out exclusive listening parties, offering a unique chance to hear new music in an intimate setting. Touring recording studios would be a highlight of our journey, showcasing where many classic and modern hits were created.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

As I navigate the early stages of my career, I may not yet have a long list of accolades to showcase my success, but I feel confidently set up for success, thanks to the unwavering support and guidance of several key figures in my life. First and foremost, I must express immense gratitude to my aunt Ryanne. Her role as my supporter and advisor has been pivotal. From helping me get settled to navigating the inevitable ups and downs of the industry, her wisdom and encouragement have been my anchor. I owe her a huge shoutout for being such an integral part of my journey.

My experiences across various recording studios in LA have also shaped my path significantly. Each studio I worked at offered a different vibe and culture. It took some time to find places where I truly resonated, but the search was worthwhile. I was fortunate to be a part of Nightbird Studios and Melrose Recording Studios, where the atmosphere of stress-free creativity, continuous learning, and a genuine interest in the team’s success made a profound impact on my growth. These studios provided not just a workplace but a creative sanctuary that nurtured my skills and ambition.

Last but not least, I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to my friend Sergio Salamanca. His recommendation for this interview with Shoutout LA is greatly appreciated. His belief in my potential and his support have been invaluable assets in my career. It’s friendships and connections like these that remind me of the collaborative spirit of our industry and the importance of lifting each other up.
