We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Mirsini and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had been struggling with cystic acne for over 15 years and nothing seemed to be working for me. I tried every skincare brand under the sun, and my skin either got worse or the acne came back after a while. It wasn’t until I took matters into my own hands at the age of 29 that a whole new world opened up for me. I graduated from IWA (Integrative Wellness Academy) in 2018 as a Holistic Wellness Coach, and the synergy between emotions, skin and food finally clicked. I was also introduced to Hemp during this time, which was such a catalyst to clearing my skin and really help me open up to who I really was and what I wanted to do. There really wasn’t any skincare containing CBD back then, so I thought to myself, what do I have to lose? It all started in my small bathroom in the East Village, NY where I would mix my CBD Tincture with either my moisturizer or just use it as a serum, and I just saw such a shift in my skin. CBD was still very new back then, and a lot of people were sceptic. I started thinking of ways to introduce this in a harmless and fun way, and that’s when the idea of a sheet mask came to me. Everyone has several masks in their home, but a lot of us are more reluctant to switch out our cleanser or moisturizer. People think that’s why MĀSK is named what it is, but it’s so much more to the name. “Each of us wears masks by which we move through the world: From how we present ourselves at the office to time spent with our loved ones, we exhibit to the world a mere version of our genuine selves. At night, we wash the day away and lay bare our truth. It is this moment, when we discard the facades, from which MĀSK draws its inspiration.”

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I struggled with acne from my early teens. From changing my diet, to trying countless of skincare brands, I discovered CBD oil through a holistic path I was taking in reclaiming her health. The more I worked to live my most vibrant live, the more I realized that self-acceptance was at the heart of my health—inside and out. I wanted to create a movement where the word beauty could have a different connotation than shallow. To feel comfortable in your own skin and accept yourself fully.

MĀSK was then founded to help support the journey to self-acceptance through the act of self-care. MĀSK seeks to nourish the skin and soothe the spirit with products created to comfort, nurture and encourage the look of healthy skin—in its most pure, authentic state. Each product is created by me,. with a focus on hand-picked natural and organic ingredients that are non-toxic, safe for all skin types, sustainable, and biodegradable.

I am so lucky to be able to work with amazing, passionate, and like-minded people. My team is truly genuine to the core, and I’ve always said that if I have my own business one day, I want to make one that’s fun to work for. I had such bad experiences with my 9-5 workplaces that I vowed to change that. Another thing is also the feedback we get from our customers and clients. The results we’ve seen from our formulas and how people say it’s helped their skin is probably the biggest accomplishment of them all.

My mother told me two things: “You can never understand something you are not” and “It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice”. I’ve tried to implement these two things into my life or business every time I come across something challenging. Trying to meet a person where they are has tought me a lot. When someone is angry or selfish it usually stems from pain, which we are all in throughout our life. Instead of cutting a person off based on a circumstance, I have always tried to take a step back and view it from their perspective. If I can be the bigger person in a situation I try to be.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I recently took a girls trip to Healdsburg, CA and completely fell in love with this town! I am dying to go back. I will actually share our itinerary because it was so good, my friend Kris planned this for us and it was just so special.

Day 1: Most of the day is spent traveling, so we made sure to bring good books, podcast episodes, and of course, sheet masks. We stayed at Harmon Guest House in the middle of town, which was a beautiful little boutique hotel. Once we had checked in we went to the roof top for a drink and some snacks before we headed to Barndiva for dinner, a Farm-to-fork American eatery in stylish, barnlike surrounds with a spacious garden patio. Let’s just say I licked my plate clean.

Day 2: Vineyard Tour Day! We booked our tour through Platypus and we visited 3 vineyards. J Richards, Trattori and Due Ruscelli. My personal favorite was Due Ruscelli that was owned by a family, and as a dog lover the fact that they had their dogs running through the fields was just amazing. Dinner this night was a Matheson, an upscale farm-to-table restaurant, and wine bar. The decor here was super funky and cool, and of course the meal was exquisite.

Day 3: Exploring Healdsburg! This town was absolutely stunning, and so clean. Nestled along the Russian River in the heart of Sonoma Wine Country, Healdsburg combines small-town charm, stunning vistas, and award-winning vintages with an eclectic mix centered around a charming town plaza lined with shops, restaurants, tasting rooms, galleries, and bars.
We went to Blanchard Tasting Room for a private tasting with owner and wine maker Mark Blanchard, he was hysterical and we even got to stomp grapes here. Then we headed over to one, of many, tasting rooms called Marine Layer. The White wine here was delicous and I bought a case to come home with me. We then had dinner at Dry Creek Kitchen, wned by Iconic chef Charlie Palmer. White cloth dining with flavors you can still taste in your memory.

Day 4: Another day of exploring. Today we went shopping, as the small boutiques were endless with so many fun things. I can personally recommend their book stores, we got lost in there for hours. We stopped for lunch at Molti Amici, where the brick oven pizza was to die for. They say that food has a unique power to connect people, and their mission is to create a warm and welcoming space that encourages meaningful connections and nourishes the body and soul. Mission succeeded! Dinner that night was a Lo & Behold, global comfort food and cultivated cocktails. We all went into a food coma and a early night after this. Lol.

Day 5: Vineyard Tour Day! Same company, Platypus. My favorite today was Notre Vue Estate, who has created a legacy of cultivated wines based on their agrarian heritage and rich tapestry of high-quality vineyards and wild open spaces. Family-owned since 1992. This was our last night, and dinner went to Valette. Born from two brothers’ lifelong dream of creating a unique dining experience in their hometown of Healdsburg. Rustic-chic wine-country eatery serves Californian cuisine & wine in an upscale space.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are two people I really want to highlight, my partner James and my friend Antonia. James was there with me from day one supporting this crazy idea, he helped start MĀSK Skincare and rooted for me along the way. Whenever I felt like giving up he was there to motivate me and remind me why I did this in the first place. I could not have done this without him.

Antonia is a brilliant Spa professional and educator, who has owned her own Organic spa for almost 20 years. She has been my mentor in all things clean ingredients, and has also entered the CBD space. We thrive when we are together, and I am always left inspired and enlightened whenever we get together. The Windham Spa has been an oasis for serenity and creativity for me when I have needed it.
