We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Noelle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, what role has risk played in your life or career?
My relationship to the concept of risk has changed over time. Every choice we make has an element of risk, does it not? Even staying the same weighs just as heavily on the risk scale as making a change and taking a step forward. Even more so most often. There is no way of knowing what the future holds so in a backwards way, the most logical move is to make that “risky” step forward that frightens and excites you. With that mindset it’s not risky at all. It’s a step on the path. The only real risk in life is not taking a chance on what you really want and living with regret. So I try to move through life with that perspective in mind.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It has definitely been a long process. I didn’t know anything about how to have a career in acting when I decided to pursue it. I took a hard pivot from my job at a non profit without any clue where to start. With the help of some friends I took a couple of classes and started auditioning for student films at the local film schools in my area. Many of which I didn’t get, some of which I did get but never got the footage back. But eventually I had enough for a small reel which led to more roles and a stronger reel, sharpened skills, etc. It definitely wasn’t easy. I’ve seen a lot of people decide it wasn’t for them in these early stages of the process. I just kept chipping away at it. I think something that made things different for me was that I was very prepared to experience a lot of failures. I was prepared for it to take a long time. But I knew it was what I wanted so I just continued day after day.
One of my favorite films I’ve done was the short film “Rose”. It was a 14 minute one take, which posed exciting challenges. We rehearsed for weeks and I’m so proud of how it turned out and how well it was received at festivals. I’ve got some other films coming out soon as well, and I can not wait to see how they turned out. I definitely have a passion for art house films that push the boundaries of storytelling. Film is such an impactful visual medium and I’m so happy to be part of it.
I have also worked a lot on the web series “Dhar Mann” and the vertical series “ReelShort” which have both been incredible to work on. They both have massive fan bases and the messages I receive from the viewers have been a huge encouragement to me to keep going. Something else I’m so grateful for is these projects have afforded me the opportunity to play a lot of different types of characters and we work very quickly, so it’s been sort of an actors boot camp for me. Definitely check them out.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Picnic and a movie at the Hollywood Forever cemetery. A walk around the Huntington Library and Gardens. Beach day, but not in Los Angeles, we’re outsourcing and going to Laguna. Sitting poolside at the Roosevelt followed by bowling upstairs. A jazz show at the Baked Potato. A puppet show at the Bob Baker Marionette Theatre.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are far too many people who have impacted and shaped my journey. But as a start: My friend Arielle Diaz, who sat down with me the day I decided to become an actress and told me everything I needed to know about taking my first steps and answered every question I had. My mother and father, for believing I can. And first person who ever told me I could be whatever I wanted back when I was scared.
