We had the good fortune of connecting with Satina Warner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Satina, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Hi there! The name of my company is Who Gon’ Say it? Yes you read that right 🙂 Have you ever been in a situation where something was so obvious and needed to be said, but no one wanted to call it out? – And the question becomes, “Who’s gonna say it?” In 2021 during the height of the pandemic, I was a Human Resources Supervisor working from home. I began seeing so many women starting businesses. Some were online boutiques, T-shirt businesses, cleaning, consulting, coaching businesses…you name it! These boss babes were out there doing the dang thing and I wanted to be out there too! I decided on a T-shirt business with the mindset that I’m not just selling T-shirts; I’m selling a feeling, a memory, a mood – culture. I toyed around with several names and picked one I really liked, but after a business entity search I had to find something else. One day, I was in a conversation with a friend and I remember telling them about a situation I was going through at work. I was really frustrated and at the end of my story my friend said, “Well who’s gon’ say it? Something clicked in my brain and at that moment I KNEW that would be the name of my company. Who Gon’ Say It is all about being present and being heard. It’s about walking into a room and letting your T-shirt do the talking.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always been as some would say a “theatrical” person. Creatively, I pull from several talents to make WGSI a fun brand. I’ll never forget one time when someone asked me, “What do you do?” I said, I sing, I write scripts, I do photography, I’m an influencer, a videographer…She said “Sweetie, you’re doing way too much. Pick one thing and stick with it.” I was really insulted when she told me this. Like, how dare she put me in a box! I’m a Renaissance Woman damn it! After learning about marketing, target audience, shaping a brand…It took years to figure this out, but ultimately, she was right. My creativity hasn’t gone anywhere, but I’ve learned to apply it in different ways with skits. One that always cracks me up is “Why black kids can’t have imaginary friends.” lol. My brand slogan lets people know exactly what they’re getting when the come to my page. Who Gon’ Say It – We sell dope T-shirts and we like to laugh.
Technically, starting a business isn’t hard. You pick a name, do a search, fill out paperwork…There’s a roadmap for all that. One of the hardest things and something I still struggle with is content creation. It’s so easy to do and yet so hard. What do I post? How many likes did it get? Are people engaged? How’s the algorithm acting today? I’ve gotten a lot better at it, but I still sometimes overthink and end up not posting much as I should on my socials.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So if one of my favorite humans was visiting me from out of town, we’re definitely going up to Griffith Observatory. I love looking out over the city and thinking of all the possibilities. It’s one of my favorite places to take out-of-towners. The fashion district in DTLA is a must so they can load up on some LA swag without breaking the bank. When we leave there, we’ll head over to Fixins Soul Kitchen and get our grub on. If there here on a Monday we’re definitely hanging out at The Sugar Mill in Tarzana where Cadillac Zack has an open blues jam and you know your girl will get on the mic and belt out some Chicago blues. One of the days we might frolic in the sand at Venice Beach.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My sister was my biggest supporter. Sadly, she passed away before I launched my business and it saddens me that I never got a chance to really make her proud. I think about her when I feel overwhelmed or when I question what I’m doing. I know she would be there to tell me to keep going, don’t give up.
