We had the good fortune of connecting with Sayan Aboudi Esq. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sayan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have always had a passion for helping others, from being in my adolescence and participating in fundraisers, to speaking out for others who were being bullied. Becoming an attorney was always a dream of mine, and when it became a reality I made a promise to myself to continue my passion and to not let anything get in my way. Therefore when I started this company, the vision was simple, to set myself and my company apart from all other law firms. While many attorneys claim to treat clients like family, in my office my clients have my personal cell phone number as well as multiple other ways to communicate with me and my team.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Do you have a budget? How do you think about your personal finances and how do you make lifestyle and spending decisions?
As all business should, I maintain a budget, however when it comes to by business, I will not withhold, as I want my clients to receive the best care a d opportunity for their case. I will often times apply a stricter budget personally, in an effort to maximize budgeting in my office for my clients. No matter how my lifestyle changes, I keep in mind that a future savings is important to sustain the current lifestyle and more importantly not to lose focus in investing in myself and the company to grow.
Risk taking: how do you think about risk, what role has taking risks played in your life/career?
I grew up watching sports, as such I have studied and followed some of the greatest athlete’s of my generation and I am inspired by them and their mentality. So when it comes to risk taking, I try to keep reminding myself what some of the greats have done. Michael Jordan once said “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I lost almost 300 games, 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I SUCCEED.” Using this mentality, I take risks when needed and I put my heart and soul into what I do. What matters to me is that I am willing to put up the fight to get justice for my clients not if I succeed or fail. I am not afraid of failing, but rather I’m always afraid of success changing me.
The late Kobe Bryant once said “if you’re afraid to fail, then you’re probably going to fail” so what is there to be afraid of? The real fear is what will you do with the success and how can you use your success for the positive. Christiano Ronaldo once said “if you believe you are the best, then you will never achieve all that you are capable of.” So to me the key is simple, stay humble and eager to achieve more. No matter how much I succeed, I always try to learn from my peers, I ask for help when it’s needed, and I always drive to make myself better.
Where are you from and how did your background and upbringing impact who you are today?
I was originally born in Iran, and moved here when I was five year old. My family like many other families during that time were exiled by the Iranian government. I believe that a lot of my passion for helping others is due to the lack of compassion that I received from my own country that took everything away from my family. I feel that this made me more compassionate and willing to jump at any chance to help anyone who has been wronged.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
What value or principle matters most to you? Why?
There is no I in team. I value standing with my clients and my teammates. In my office I am not a boss, I am a leader. I have a team of individuals who put in their heart and soul into our clients’ cases and as such I owe them the same respect to do
Work life balance: how has your balance changed over time? How do you think about the balance?
Balancing Family and work is hard, when there is mutual respect between the two, you can have best of both worlds. As I mentioned before I have twins, they are 3.5 years old and to say they are my world would be an understatement. So at times I leave work around 5 or 6 pm only to come back around 8pm after the kids are put to bed for the night and work away until early morning hours. My wife is very understanding and knows my passion for the work I do, so for me, my balance is found in trying to be there for all the important times and at the same time focus on my vision for the company.
What’s the end goal? Where do you want to be professionally by the end of your career?
I don’t think I have an end goal, the goal has always been to help as many people I can and as for the company, my goal will never change to make the corporation bigger and better. I do see myself retiring one day but at that point I hope I have touched enough lives that when I am gone, people will remember me for the good I did and my name is brought up with a smile.
Why did you pursue an artistic or creative career?
My pursue for being an attorney was solely on the passion of helping others who may not know there own rights or be able to advocate for themselves.
Tell us about a book you’ve read and why you like it / what impact it had on you.
Its no secret I am a die hard Kobe Bryant fan as such I think all entrepreneurs should read “The Mamba Mentality”, the drive, the dedication, the education, the work habit, the inspiration Kobe had in his pressure to become the greatest of all time is simply not short of a fairytale story. If there is one thing to take away from this book it is that nothing great comes easy and when you work hard for what you want, the success is only more meaningful.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
What is the most important factor behind your success / the success of your brand?
My team, My team, and My Team. I would never be who I am today if it wasn’t for all of my different teams. The First Team I have at home. My wife and twins who drive me to do better and make the world better. The Second team I grew up with, my parents and my brothers, who have always believed in me and pushed me to believe in myself. The last but not least Team, is my work family. They say it takes a village to become successful, and the saying could not be more true, My success is due to the support system I have in place, from my family to my team mates. My family gives me the drive and my Teammates give me the passion to do what we do day in and day out. My success is their success and their success is my success.
