We had the good fortune of connecting with Scott Faulconbridge and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Scott, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
That if i’m not learning and making some mistakes along the way I’m doing it wrong. I think you just need to be constantly listening, adapting, changing , doing it wrong, doing it right more and loving what you do every day. I try to get that going as much as I can.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been a stand up comedian, improviser, writer and actor for close to 30 years. I made a living doing these things while raising a family. I’ve had a life/work balance for most of it. It’s been difficult because the life of a comedian and the life of a dedicated family person don’t always work well together. I learned very early that I would never be happy with just a career and I didn’t pursue certain career paths. It was difficult because if you’re around a long time and you haven’t achieved a high level of success, this is an industry that writes you off. This very thing became my strength; I turned to the people that never gave up supporting me, booking me and giving me opportunities to survive will never flake away. I just made that my story. I’m a survivor who’s used humour to get there.. I keep working on new projects, especially with the next generation. I currently am working on several projects, live performance and television, with younger people, and some older too, but we all share a passion for what we do. I developed a sketch show called ‘Faulconbridge’s Falling Down’ , a departure from my stand up, which has a lot fantastical fun takes on the way the world is sometimes. We attracted a lot of other artists to the project who enjoyed the project and it will come out on Bell Fibe TV1 in Canada this summer.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting Ontario, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Burlington, Ontario. We’d start at the beach, yes we have beaches on lake Ontario and who doesn’t like the beach? We’d sample some of the eateries, from the ma and pa ‘Dee Hot Shoppe’, to the reasonably priced ‘Rahoon Persion Eatery’ and maybe throw in some high end ‘Spencer’s’ by the waterfront. We’d see a bit of Toronto, not too far away, maybe hang from the CN tower, then do some hiking on the Bruce trail, check out Niagara Falls (just the falls, in and out, don’t get sucked into the wax museumed tourist trap that surrounds it) and then spend a half day at a Niagra winery. The wrap up would be to spend a few days north at a Muskoga cottage just north of us for some classic Canadian relaxation. It would include some mountain biking, fishing, swimming and bbqing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A man named Joe Bodolai who was executive producer of a TV series called ‘Comics’ (CBC, network in Canada) where I was able to do both stand up and sketch. He gave both myself and a lot of other comedians opportunities that didn’t exist before Joe came along. He got my reality closer to my dreams and that’s something in this life.
