We had the good fortune of connecting with SEAN AEON and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi SEAN, why did you pursue a creative career?
There’s a quote in my second book that says, “Art was how artists were able to breathe,” and I think that basically says it all. I’m not myself or at my happiest when I’m not creating.
I love what I do, and with storytelling specifically, there’s a magic in being able to create people, worlds, and perspectives that never existed or existed in a completely different way.
Fictional narratives have also been a tremendous teacher throughout my life, and I’ve always felt drawn to capture and share my observations just like those who impacted me by doing the same.
When the creative process is entered into passionately and authentically, I see art as one of our most powerful tools for strengthening our connection to ourselves and others.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m extremely excited about the direction my current material is taking. The art and stories within my latest project, LA on LSD, are the most dynamic and meaningful that I’ve been able to share.
The insight within my narratives is something I see as unique. I write to tell stories that mean something to me, and through listening to others, stories that don’t only mean something to me.
For centuries humanity utilized fiction, and many forms of art, in order to interpret, expose, and understand the mass of information we encounter, and my art does the same in a modern way. Almost every page contains a highlighted quote, so readers can flip through and see what observation catches their interest.
Books have been around forever and done in many different ways, so as a multi-media artist, I’ve tried to create a unique reading experience with as many elements as possible.
One of the visual aspects is the original photography within the book. Each chapter has a photograph taken by myself that speaks to what the upcoming narrative will explore, as well as capturing a part of California, and specifically LA.
Inspired by one of the fictional philosophies from LA on LSD, Aeonilism, I was led to create the aeonaes: a single-line symbol and one word to express, “As above, so below.” My experience and the experiences shared with me by others have made clear the way all dependent everything else, and what we perceive as “above” requires the support of what we perceive as “below.”
I also create the brushes for each piece by hand, so something else unique about my material is that I stress creating uniquely. I see it as unfortunate that so many take the easy route of duplicating what’s already been done. We all benefit a little less from that.
In turn, this project, and the follow-ups that I’m working on, have an underlying focus on harmony through understanding.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love LA. I’ve only been here for three years, and the first year and half was during covid, so I didn’t get to see too much of what the city offered.
I still haven’t gotten out much because I’ve been piecing projects, but I can speak for Venice Beach.
I’ve met the most incredible people there, and there haven’t been many times that I can remember where something memorable hasn’t taken place. It truly has vortex qualities, swirling together people and perspectives from all over who seem to have passion and discovery as a constant between them.
The great thing about LA, and the greater Southern California area, is that it’s also close to other nearby vibrant locations. I moved to California from the east coast, and since being here I’ve been to Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Francisco, as well as a couple cities in Mexico, all via relatively short and inexpensive bus rides. The day-trip options are pretty endless.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to Shoutout everyone and everything. My experience has led me to realize that all we come into contact with affects who we are.
Every one of our encounters is responsible for our greatness and our growth, so I feel like all are equally deserving of recognition.
I would love to individually acknowledge each interaction I’ve ever had and each person I’ve interacted with.
I’ve seen how those who support us can provide as much inspiration and motivation as those who don’t, although each is expressed and felt differently. I think hierarchy, in a way, can dim our clarity and level of universal appreciation.
Compasis: each step taken in time being taken by everything in existence at once.
With all that being said, Ms. Arilia Winn was the kind heart who connected me with The Shoutout series in secret, and I’m heavy with gratitude that she did.
