We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean Poe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sean, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Really it was a necessity, I started getting work and I was perpetually worried/ wanting to be on the up and up. But the gigs started as just playing music and then that turned into can you play here and suddenly I was working a lot!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As far as artistry goes I think what really set me apart from my contemporary’s wasn’t the art itself but the drive. Starting out I was hungry and I took a yes man approach to opportunities which I think really allowed me to have a wide variety of skills musically.
I’m really proud of that drive, and how it’s allowed me to build connections. Sort of a party to taking every opportunity was that you make a lot of friends and by approaching each new project with genuine enthusiasm it really endears us to each other and that’s really been the key to my success. Building that network just leads to more and more opportunities.
It wasn’t really a challenge to get here but it was a long journey. I started by hopping on stage at the local blues jam and getting kicked off stage for sucking. Coming back the next week and rinse repeat. Add some lessons over the years lots of different bands, going back to school for music, and finally being able to pivot to DJing when that opportunity presented itself. Lots of change lots of moving parts but the only real “challenge has been saying Yes and being open to change!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well first thing is I like animals! So the living desert is a must. I love coffee so a tour of the local coffee shops is in order, specifically I love to go to IW coffee in palm desert, and frontier coffee in yucca valley! If we are day tripping rad coffee in upland is also the coolest punk rock coffee shop ever! I follow a local roaster too so if a shop serves Coachella valley coffee im there!
Brunch at the Tiny Pony, Wilma & Frieda’s, and brunch 101.
And finally the local music scene, gotta catch some shows. Downtown Indio has a few spots that have seen a boon to live local music such as music house Indio and the lab! Also little street music hall RIP it’s just closed its doors. And the high desert yucca JT scene is unmatched, gotta catch a. Show at pappy & Harriet’s, Mojave Gold and the Tiny pony tavern!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Totally! I had several mentors over the years, specifically my drum teachers Roger king & Andy Fraga who really pushed me and helped hone my musical skill and identity. And also one of my best friends Dan Perry and his family who invited/ dragged me out to local clubs to see live music and pushed me to get on stage! And finally my mom who was the most supportive and never said no. Whatever I need on my musical journey she was immediately on board!
