We had the good fortune of connecting with Semaj Tate and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Semaj, what do you want your legacy to be?
I want to be remembered as the artist & producer willing to do things on their own terms. Of course I want to be the greatest ever & be considered in that argument, but when my future children talk to others about their father; I want them to hear how I was able to persevere through all of the adversity thrown my way. I want them to hear about all of the ways I could’ve won, but chose to do so on my terms with my people or alone. I want them to hear how I never gave up, even when I felt like it many of times. I get a high on proving people wrong. I get an even better high off of doing the total opposite and achieving even more than what was thought of initially.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I honestly feel like what separates me from others is my will & faith. I have to have faith in myself even when I don’t feel like I’m good enough. The people around me that show the faith they have in me is what keeps me going. I am most proud of myself getting this far in my career because I feel like so many people create music just to past time. Everything is so accessible now that it makes it easy for everyone to release music. I’ve only been recording as an artist for about 16 months, but I’ve been producing since I was like 13 years old. All of the things and phases I’ve been through, I know many would have quit by now and I’ve seen many quit. I’m 21 now & am 9 years into my journey. The journey itself keeps me excited for what’s to come, as well as seeing how far I have come.

It wasn’t easy to get to where I am, but I also feel like I still haven’t done enough. Ive learned many business oriented things that have changed how I see the music business as well as the people in it. It’s challenging sometimes because we look for ourselves in other people. I want people to know that as long as you keep going and have a desire in you to reach your goals, there is nothing that can stop you. I want people to know that I make music for the people who can’t do so themselves & that I’m here to get my story as well as others to the rest of the world to hear.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My mom caters food so I’d definitely be getting Nyk Naaacs catered all week long. I’d take my guest to Diddy Riese for the ice cream cookie sandwiches. Of course I’d take them to the studio, but I’d take them to a few amusement parks, malls, & anything that they really would want to see in LA. They’d typically have the most rank on where they’d want to go since most people come to LA once.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother, my business partner Aleyse, my family, TMac, Jay, Malia, & all of my supporters; especially the consistent supporters. I’ve been around and met so many people throughout my journey that I couldn’t even name everyone. I think more so about the people who are here now and consistently are pushing me to be better.
