We had the good fortune of connecting with Sergio Novoa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sergio, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success is never giving up. People are quick to give their opinion, and I’ve learned to let it in one ear and out the other. Of course, there are folks who have helpful feedback…the rest, I put aside. Having a clear vision is the most important thing for me. As long as I do the work, I keep trekking forward.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love to make people laugh. That is the main reason I got into stand up comedy. Stand up comedy has to be by far the most bipolar thing I have ever done in my life…it’s definitely the bumpiest ride I’ve ever been on. The only way to overcome the fear is to do anyway. I just have to keep getting up on stage. What sets me apart is my perspective. My life experience and reaction is specific to me. Along the way, I’ve learned how to present the tragic moments in a way that makes people laugh. I want the world to know that I’m not only handsome, but funny as well. HAHAHA…
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting, I’d take him to Griffith Park for a hike. We’d then go to Eataly in Century City for lunch and we’d get over to WeHo for drinks after. At night, we’d have dinner at Le Petit Paris and then go to a Comedy Club. We’d end the night dancing at the Evita.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I may be the one on stage, but it takes a village to make it happen. Tony Sparks (SF Comic) is the first person I have to thank. He has supported me from day one. My closest friends Robert, Lyle, Vanessa, Curt and Javed. They come to my shows and always support my crazy ideas (and I’ve had many). As far as books, The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer, Man’s Sear for Meaning by Viktor E Frankl, Unfu*k Yourself by Gary John Bishop, What I Know for Sure by Oprah Winfrey, Sings by Laura Lynne Jackson, Becoming by Michelle Obama…just to name a few.
