We had the good fortune of connecting with sergiu Gherman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi sergiu, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
Maybe the most difficult and necessary at the time was leaving home (Romania) and seeing my mom beyond sad but still the most supportive. She is the strongest woman I know and I knew I have absolutely no excuse but make it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I moved from Romania to Chicago, a little bit before I turned 18. I started making music over there, without too many resources. As a kid, I used to watch MTV on a prerecorded cassette tape from Germany. My dad used to get me those tapes and I was glued to the TV watching all these music videos, but I never got to see “Black or White” by MJ in full because the tape was done. It was beyond frustrating. I failed so many times. I moved to LA 3 times prior to moving for good. It never worked. Last time I moved, I had $500 and no promises, no network. I can say that I was like a kid in a candy store tho. Just being able to be in the same places where my heroes were, I knew I had no excuse and I feel that I’m just getting started. Every day I’m trying to get better, as a human and as a producer. Team work is everything!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Big foodie here. There’s a few places where I take most of my friends that are visiting. First one on the list, it has to be Bavel. Chef Ori and Genevieve Gergis are huge artists. I was able to experience Bavel the day it opened and I couldn’t believe that an experience like that is actually possible. My favorite pizza in town will have to be L’antica Pizzeria de Michelle in Hollywood, Napoli style. Phenomenal. Favorite overall experience is VERSE restaurant. Manny created one of the most unique experiences, ever. Oh, let’s not forget the best burger in LA: Burgers by Standing’s
Another cool thing about LA is concerts, very cool exhibits and dope POP UP’s.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Family first of course. Musically, my biggest inspiration would be my favorite artist, Michael Jackson. If I could give a shout-out to somebody in this moment, it would be Bekon. We started this together and we’re still here. I met Bekon through one of my mentors, Dj Khalil, where I learned so much about music and production. Shoutout to my management team, Prodigy Artists! Steven and Bryce, legends! Big shoutout to my friend EDB, without you it would’ve been hard staying in LA.
