We had the good fortune of connecting with Seth Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Seth, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Definitely leaving my religion and moving to Los Angeles. I was raised in a fringe Mormon community so my life would’ve turned out pretty differently had I stayed. I think generally the best choice I’ve made is to be disobey to authority haha. Guillermo Del Toro once told my class that “doubt is the beginning of intelligence” and those are words I try to live by.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Harlen Ellison always hated being called a “sci-fi” writer so I’ll just say I’m a screen writer. I’ve written two pilots, a feature, and a number of short films… one of which is the monster movie: “SILAS” which premiered at SeriesFest Season 9 this year.

Trying to get weird art on screen is hard but I’ve been lucky (so far). The hardest thing right now is this writers strike. This without a doubt has been a hard year not just me… but all of us. So it goes.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For my money there’s two places everyone should visit in Los Angeles:

Canter’s on Fairfax, the best restaurant in the world (at least I think so) where they should definitely order a vanilla egg cream and a bowl of matzah ball soup. It’s a celebrity hangout from the old days, being a stomping ground for hippies, actors, writers and even Guns N Roses.

And then there’s the New Beverly Cinema, owned by Quentin Tarantino and which shows old 35mm movies 365 days of the year including holidays, complete with old trailers and usually a Bugs Bunny cartoon pre show. It’s my happy place and if I were you I’d go to a midnight show immediately and say hi to Kyle who works in concessions. Truly a temple of cinema.

Some honorable mentions are the Aero cinema in Santa Monica (hey Zoe how are ya?), and Brain Dead Studios Fairfax (walking distance from Canter’s coincidentally)

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m gonna cheat and say two… both of whom were my professors at Chapman.

John Vandergriff, a talented writer who worked on Home Improvement & Sabrina the Teenage Witch. He helped me find myself creatively and was one of the only people to tell me I was good enough. One of the funniest and most talented people I know.

And Jeff Fazio, creator and showrunner on the Hunger (1997). He’s been a father figure to me and always been there for me when times were rough. Thanks for all the Bukowski books Jeff, love ya lots.
