Meet Shaghayegh Cyrous | Artist and Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shaghayegh Cyrous and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shaghayegh, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
I usually don’t give up; I try to change my perception or perspective towards something and have an open mind and acceptance that maybe I should follow another specific path or way of reaching the goal. I believe each failure will teach you something new and help you to choose your next step stronger.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art and design focus on connection and communication between people and within themselves and explore themes of displacement and belonging. I express these ideas using different media, such as video, installation, painting, and performance, and also within my designs.
What makes my work unique is my curiosity, seeing my surroundings from outside the box and always trying to find other perspectives. People usually recognize me as someone who sees lights in darkness, and I always love to keep this quality. I bring my stories and emotions as a pixel and a small part of society into my art, creating a deep connection with the audience.
I’m proud of the way my art can connect people, bring people together, and start conversations within their inner selves and also within society regarding social issues. I’m excited to keep exploring new ways to engage with my audience and share my exploration of the planet Earth.
Getting here wasn’t easy at all. I faced many challenges, whether when I was living in Iran or when I moved to the United States. But in each era, having the desire to belong and create a community helped me to stay curious and find ways to expand my understanding, adapt to a new culture, and find my voice as an artist. I always tried to stay committed and consistent with my vision and kept working hard.
I overcame challenges by staying persistent and hopeful and always being open to learning and growing. I always believe that as you enter a path, a road will appear, as Rumi also said beautifully.
I’ve learned that perseverance is a key and it’s important to stay true to your vision. Also, connecting with others and building a supportive network can make a huge difference.
I hope that the world knows that my art is more than just aesthetics; it’s about creating meaningful connections and understanding between people and within themselves and creating these bridges. I hope my stories represent resilience and showcase the power of art that can bridge gaps between people and cultures.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many amazing places! On top of my head, I would take them to Santa Monica and next to the beach! I love Palaside Park. It’s too gorgeous. The Broad Museum, Hammer Museum, Getty Center. Weho, for having a drink, Westwood to get Persian food.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Ah, there are so many I can name. Irani Da Silva, LaMar Baylor, Aisan Hoss, Frida Moss Arsam Qajar, Cherry Wood, Damina, Mobina Nouri, Katayoun Bahrami, and Labkhand Olfatmanesh are all incredible dancers, choreographers, engineers, philosophers, and artists, and I enjoy working with them, having inspiring conversations with them.
