We had the good fortune of connecting with Shan Xu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shan, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued an artistic and creative career because of my profound fascination with the intricate relationship between technology and nature. Growing up, I was always intrigued by how these two seemingly opposing forces could coexist harmoniously. This curiosity led me to explore new-media art, which provides a perfect platform to delve into this interplay.

As a new-media artist, my work aims to uncover the hidden networks that lie beneath the surface of our everyday lives. Through digital media and interactive installations, I strive to create a visual language that encourages viewers to contemplate the subtle relationships between technology and the natural world. This fusion of art and technology not only allows me to envision and conceptualize the future but also helps me to emphasize the importance of understanding and respecting our environment.

Ultimately, my artistic career is driven by a desire to create meaningful and thought-provoking art that reflects the complexities of our modern world and inspires others to see the beauty in the intersection of technology and nature.

Growing up in a small village, I was always fascinated by nature and technology. As a child, I loved exploring the nearby forest, collecting branches, stones, and insects. One day, I found a mysterious metal plate that looked like it came from an alien spaceship. I decided to turn it into a “time-travel portal” using old wires and electronic components. Although the portal didn’t actually transport me to another world, it sparked my passion for blending technology and creativity.

This childhood fascination led me to study digital media art at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts. I further expanded my horizons through an exchange program in Denmark, where the minimalist beauty of Nordic design deeply influenced me. During a winter night in Denmark, I saw an ice lake shimmering under the moonlight and was inspired to create an interactive installation. This idea came to life during my studies at the California College of the Arts, resulting in a piece called “Light of the Ice Lake.”

My work received widespread attention, winning multiple international awards and being exhibited in numerous important venues. However, the path of an artist is not always glamorous. I faced financial difficulties and a lack of market recognition. But just like the time-travel portal from my childhood, I didn’t give up. Instead, I founded the Useless Art Agency with my partner. Through this platform, I not only promoted my own work but also helped other emerging artists realize their dreams.

In the future, my team and I would like to set up an “Interstellar Journey” exhibition in the desert, using technology and art to take visitors on a journey through the vast universe. In my imagination, I feel like I was back in that forest with my childhood portal, filled with curiosity and a sense of exploration for the unknown.

I hope to continue creating more interesting and meaningful works in the future, allowing more people to experience the beautiful fusion of technology and nature through art. I believe that everyone has a “time-travel portal” in their heart, waiting to be discovered and explored.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting, I’d definitely take her to Brooklyn. We’d start by exploring the art district in DUMBO, checking out the murals and galleries, and then grabbing some ice cream at Ample Hills Creamery. Next, we’d visit the Brooklyn Botanic Garden to enjoy the beautiful nature. For lunch, we’d head to Juliana’s Pizza for some delicious pizza. In the evening, we’d take a stroll along the Brooklyn Heights Promenade to admire the Manhattan skyline at sunset. Finally, we’d wrap up the day at Westlight, enjoying stunning views of the city at night. Brooklyn’s vibrant mix of art, culture, and food would ensure she has an unforgettable time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Early in my artistic career, I had the fortune of meeting Tairan Hao(Ty) at a new media art exhibition. At that time, I was struggling with the interactive design of a 3D project. My work involved complex user interactions, but I had no idea how to program these interactive effects. TY noticed my frustration and offered to help. He invited me to his studio and explained in detail how to use Unity and physical technology to achieve the interactive elements in my work. With his guidance, I not only resolved the technical issues but also gained profound insights from his creative philosophy.

Ty is a talented new media artist. He founded the Tairan Hao Studio, and his works explore personal identity and social issues, exhibited globally to great acclaim. His humility and professional attitude left a deep impression on me. His support has been invaluable, making me more confident and determined in my artistic journey.
