We had the good fortune of connecting with Shaney Poo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shaney Poo, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I feel like I’ve been taking risks my whole life ever since I was a teen. Looking back I realized these were more than just risks but they were all leaps of faith. To pursue a life in the music world is a risk on it’s own, because there truly never any certainty when it comes to the music business. One of my first major leaps of faith was when I was 19. I decided I wanted to take music seriously so I took a big “leap of faith” and pursued my purpose even if it meant leaving college. I took a risk when I recorded my first song and filmed a music video for it. I took a risk when I packed my bags, left behind my life in Boston and moved to New York to pursue music. I also took another risk when I started my podcast/public platform called Show & Tell Boston, which has been nominated at the Boston Music Awards twice. Life is full of taking risks, you just need to know when’s the right time to risk it.

Business, music, relationships etc all require a certain amount of risk and faith. So you need to have enough faith in your own abilities to be able to do anything great in life. To be successful you need to take risks and you need to have faith. Without these attributes you’ll be too afraid to do what needs to be done to reach your goals.

There’s a classic quote from hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, he said “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”. I’m a firm believer of this quote, it always resonates with me.

All in all taking risks separates those who are seriously dedicated from the pretenders and having faith keeps you on you path even when you’re faced with uncertainty.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My music is an expression of who I am, what I think, what I see, what I feel and all of my experiences. Growing up music always played a major role in my life, so I knew early on in life who I wanted to be. Sonically my music is a mix of everything I love and grew up with, it can be Pop, Hip Hop, Island, Afro, R&B, Gospel, you name it. With my latest release Latin Nights, I’m meshing different yet similar cultures together for a smooth new track that slaps! Definitely check out Latin Nights on all streaming sites. So far in my 10 year music career, I’ve been proud to see how I have evolved and grown from project to project. When I look back at my catalogue of music, it sorta tells the story of a boy growing into a man discovering life and purpose. I’m proud of how I’ve been able to effect people in a great way with music and how its opened doors in many other areas like what Show & Tell Boston is doing with the community. The only way to get where I’m at today is to truly love what you do, that’s most important. You also have to work very hard to refine your skills and get your self out there. Lastly, you always need to have faith, that’s a big one because there’s going to moment where you doubt yourself, you need to stay confident and have faith. The biggest lesson I’ve learned so far, is to take your time and do everything the right way, I’m into making fast food music at this point of my life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honestly if a friend was visiting my city, I would tell to come by Show & Tell Boston first. For me and many others, it’s a cool way to meet other creatives and everyday people in the community while having a good time. They host podcasts, community forums and music showcases, it’s like the culture of Boston. If you want to party some more, I like going to Central Sq in Cambridge, they have some cool bars, venues and places to dance, it’s youthful cool scene. Boston is a diverse place, so when it comes to food it’s about what you’re into. If you want Spanish food I also go to Merengues or Dona Habana, they have a vibe, I usually eat Haitian food at home but if you looking for a night out Tamboo in Brockton is one of my favorites, Boston’s also known its Italian community and they have some amazing restaurants in the North End.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I always want to thank God before anything else, because I know without his help nothing I do is even possible. Second, I want to shout out my family and friends who have stood by me through all the good times and tall he tough times and finally I want to thank all the fans & supporters who have been with me all these years, I appreciate every single one of you all. Love.
