We had the good fortune of connecting with Shangshu Shi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shangshu, what inspires you?
There are lots of things that inspire me that is actually not music, even though music itself is a huge element of my inspiration. Film, games, books, things that are humanity related tend to inspire me in the most interesting and unexpected manners. I get to experience the human emotion that is being mixed into the situation and get inspire to try to interpret that kinds of emotion. To an certain extent, that has become my first go-to when I have to write something or create something: Use my creative skill in depicting human emotion that my client is trying to convey through their own form of media.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I can talk about how I became into music from the beginning of my kindergarten life, but it is almost at the beginning of my college life where I finally decided that I want to write music as my career. It is at the end of my first year where I starte to write music for video game developers, that begins an entirety of journey where I compose, and design sounds for different kinds of people, and then the journey of developing my own game where I can put my music and designed sounds onto. It is called Project N.E.X.T and it is being published on the Steam platform. It wasn’t the easiest task especially where you gradually realized there are so much you need to do and there’s so little time for you to do so, but I’m lucky enough to make it see its destination. I guess what I learned is that, as someone once said, to make the choice and to make the decision is better that to do nothing, as you are just in the whims of the circumstances. I am glad I took the choices and put my action, and my sweat and tears to it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would probably take them first to the campus, showing them the place where I go to study and work for almost everyday throughout these last 2 years. Showing them around and let them meet all the great people who has never ceased to inspire and support me throughout the journey. Then I might take them to all the great restaurants in the city of Miami, where lots of things that are not usually expected for an Asian are there and all the food are just purely awesome. Last but not least, I might bring them to the beach, either to watch the sun rise, or just see the sky when the sun goes down, as the shorelines are the most beautiful scene to watch.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family, to begin with. They are every reason I get to do what I do at this stage of my life. They have always showed me their unwavered faith in me and what I do. Some of my friends who have been inspiring and supporting me throughout the journey also deserves the recognition. There are a great amount of times where I fall into uncertainty and self-doubt and they never give up on me, but continue to support me for who I am and what I have been through.
