Hi Shanice, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?

My artistic journey ignited in my early years, with a passion for sketching and painting that served as a personal outlet for my emotions, thoughts, and observations in ways that words couldn’t adequately capture. My family recognized my artistic fervour and became aware of my deep-seated passion for art. During my teenage years, I found myself reassuring them that a career in the arts could be not only stable but also profoundly fulfilling. My educational pursuits further solidified my commitment to the arts. Completing an Advanced Diploma in Art and Design and a 1st Class B.A. (Hons) in Fine Art at MCAST’s Institute for the Creative Arts in Mosta, Malta, provided me with a solid foundation in art theory and practice. My current role as a Museum Assistant and PR Executive at the MPM Arts Hub allows me to immerse myself in the vibrant Maltese art scene, promoting both local and international artists while nurturing my personal artistic growth.

Art’s profound ability to communicate beyond language has always fascinated me, guiding my dedication to exploring subjects deeply and gaining insights through my perception. Recently, my work has focused on introspective and personal narratives, reflecting my ongoing exploration of human emotions through art.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

My art is deeply personal and rooted in introspection, drawing inspiration from the diverse human experiences that shape our lives. I meticulously capture the essence of the human form, particularly through self-portraits and portraits of loved ones, exploring the depths of emotions and experiences. I sometimes like to focus on capturing the vulnerability within self-portraits, aiming to convey honesty, fragility, and intimacy. I take pride in the relatability of my work, creating subtle yet profound connections with viewers and unveiling the intricate nuances of the human form. The attention to detail illuminates the unique aspects of individuality in each line or stroke.

I am proud of how my art bridges personal experiences and the universal human condition. This connection not only serves as a catalyst for self-discovery but also resonates with viewers on an intimate level. I am excited about the ongoing evolution of my narrative, continually discovering new layers of meaning and expression in the human form. My art becomes a dynamic exploration, encouraging viewers to appreciate the profound beauty embedded in the details of the human story.

How did you get to where you are today professionally? Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges?

As an adolescent, I encountered scepticism, particularly from my parents, regarding the stability of a creative career. Undeterred, I pursued my passion and enrolled in academic programs at MCAST. These academic foundations provided me with the technical expertise and artistic vision to navigate the complexities of the art world.

Beyond the classroom, I sought opportunities to immerse myself in the vibrant art scene, both locally and internationally. Engaging in internships at galleries in Malta and Florence, Italy, allowed me to collaborate with seasoned artists and professionals, gaining invaluable insights into the dynamics of the creative community.

To further refine my skills and establish a stronger presence in the art community, I participated in local and international exhibitions and collaborations. These experiences not only enriched my portfolio but also solidified my connections, deepening my understanding of the ever-evolving art scene.

In my current role as a Museum Assistant & PR Executive at MPM Arts Hub, I am dedicated to merging my passion for art with my professional experience. While the demands of a full-time job can be challenging, I treasure the opportunities it presents to engage with a diverse range of artists and art forms. Despite time constraints, I wholeheartedly dedicate myself to my drawings and paintings after hours, finding moments amidst a busy schedule to create. This balance is imperative, as it allows me to actively promote artists and their exhibitions while fuelling my own creative journey.

What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way?

My artistic journey has been a continuous learning experience, shaped by invaluable lessons in perseverance, dedication, and introspection. Embracing challenges has been integral to my artistic growth and skill refinement. Nurturing an inquisitive mindset has played a crucial role in exploring new artistic avenues and emotional depths, enriching my work with meaning.

For aspiring artists, I encourage the embrace of curiosity and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. This mindset not only expands artistic horizons but also fosters connections within the art community, creating a culture of mutual growth and inspiration. I advocate for people to embrace their passions, view mistakes as stepping stones, and never lose sight of their dreams.

What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?

I am a passionate and inquisitive artist with a deep-rooted commitment to personal growth and artistic expression. Through my art, I explore the complexities of perception, reality, and identity, inviting viewers to engage in contemplative dialogue. I believe that art has the power to transcend boundaries and connect individuals on profound levels. With a focus on the vulnerability of the human experience, I seek to capture the raw authenticity, honesty, fragility, and intimacy that lie within the minute moments of our lives. My artwork aims to cultivate a space for reflection and connection, encouraging others to embrace their own vulnerabilities and discover the inherent beauty of being human.

Reflecting on my artistic pursuits, I’m incredibly thankful for the unwavering support of the people who have been instrumental in guiding me along the way. My heartfelt appreciation extends to my family, partner, friends, mentors, galleries, and supporters. Moreover, I am deeply convinced that success in the artistic community is a collective effort. I am fortunate to be part of a community of talented artist-friends who have helped me shape my artistic direction and connect with a wider audience. Fostering collaborations with brilliant curators within this community has not only enriched my artistic journey but has also opened doors for me to showcase my work.
