We had the good fortune of connecting with Shannon Coty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shannon, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When talking about risk, a lot of people assume we are talking about monetary risks but today I want to touch on the depth risk actually has on the soul.

Taking risks and living audaciously is something I have always done. Maybe I can attribute that to being the first born in my family and having to navigate life with no instruction manual? All jokes aside, without it, I wouldn’t be who I am today. I have not lived the “conventional” life that was laid out for me. We are given one shot at this grand adventure and I want this life I have to be inspiring and something I won’t shut up about to my grandkids. The only way to do that, is to be radical with bringing my visions to life.

I will say the biggest risk I took was initially betting on myself. That was the dawn of the “all or nothing”. There is a certain level of faith and self love that is needed in order to take those beginning leaps into alchemizing dreams into reality. The world trains us to believe we should make ourselves small and palatable – when you grow tired of that rhetoric, that is when you start seeing in technicolor. Conquering that mindset opens the doors to the unknown, everything after that is icing on the cake. The day I chose myself, was the day I chose risk too, now I live in tandem to it. I like to see risk as an opportunity for the unknown to show you miracles or lessons. Either it teaches you about strengthening your resilence, determination, and faith or it shows you why those things got you where you wanted to be.

When I first started my entrepreneur journey, I was so afraid of being seen and failing. Not being able to control the perceptions of others intimated me at first. Overtime instead of letting the fear stop me, I challenged it. I asked it WHY? None of the answers came from my own beliefs, it was the voices of others that were the loudest. Once I focused on my inner whisper, everything started to make sense. The mountains that I thought were mountains were just hills. The fear that was once stopping me turned to curiosity. There is so much self discovery when we choose risking our past selves in order to meet the highest version of ourselves. This is why I believe risk is one of the greatest catalysts to growth.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For years I have prided myself on being a nicheless content creator. I have never enjoyed the concept of “niching down” to play the algorithm for views or engagement. Boxing in the complexities of being a human is something I just don’t agree with. We are a multifaceted ever changing spirit. I wanted the content and art that I make to reflect that.

I have made content and collabed with others only because I truly wanted to. I love the idea that my Youtube channel is an archive of the experiences I have learned from, the beautiful moments that touched my heart, and the devastation that life can bring occassionally. I love the idea that I get to create a vision with other like-minds through fashion and photography and modeling. I love that I get to be involved with events where I can showcase artists and small business who are bringing their dreams to life. I want the things I create to reflect my growth and mindset, I want it to touch people and tell a story about their humanity and that of others.

It took me a long while to get to a space where my content is reflecting the direction and vision that I want. That is the beauty in the journey though. We start off inexperienced, curious, and confused – but nonetheless brave. For me personally, I have never been swayed by trends and I have to attribute that to being able to find my inner voice and have it reflect in the things I make. Especially with the influence of social media, it is very easy to repeat the same trend as everyone else, but it’s a whole different ballpark to dance to the beat of your own drum. One way focuses on views and the other focuses on the community. I believe being vulnerable is how we connect with eachother. I want that experience for someone when they come across my content. I want it to touch their heart and unlock something inside of them that makes them feel more human, more authentic.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friends were visting me, we are going to make it a party.

DAY 1:
We are keepin it casual because it’s the fly in day I’m going to say around 11am. I have treated you to a fresh towel, fully stocked shower and lux skincare, no need for those travel sizes you brought. Depending on the vibes, my man and I cook or we will go out to BJS. It is truly underated and the food is phenomenal. After our bellies are full, we go grocery shopping for all the things because we are going camping in a few days. Once home we make cocktails/ wine, play a movie in the background and catch up on all the tea.

DAY 2:
(As I’m writing this it’s fall) Wake up to a delicious all american breakfast. We grab coffee from Dutch Bros because they truly are better than Starbucks. We head out to Riley’s Farm to marvel at the apple orchards and snag us a yummy lil carmel apple from the trading post. Later we have a bbq, fire and we play JackBox. Then we start packing for camping.

DAY 3:
We wake up EARLY. Grab some ham and cheese croissants from Sunny Doughnut because WOW. They are sold out usually by 8am that speaks for itself. We hit the road up to Yosemite, on the way we stop in Kernville to go white water rafting and spend the night in a hotel.

DAY 4:
Another early day! We head to Yosemite officially for camping. We stop along the way for lunch at any of the cute mom and pop restaurants. We make it to Yosemite and set up our glamp. Later that night we take shots and cozy up around the fire to fend off the cold. The fam made chili dogs and we spill the tea and tell ghost stories into the wee hours of the night to see the stars.

DAY 5:
First one to rise, starts the fire and begins breakfast. Usually the yummy smells wakes everyone else up too! We have another glorious breakfast of pancakes, eggs, potatoes, bacon, toast, coffee and tea to warm us for the day. After breakfast we cold dive into the river to wash up and spark life back into us after drinking all night. Then we spend the majority of the day hiking the beautiful trails and showing you all of our favorite scenic routes. Later that night we have steak and the fixings for dinner and some more shots because why not we are camping. We call it an early night though because we leave in the morning. So we pack up non essentials.

DAY 6
First one awake starts the fire and begins breakfast (which will be me about 90% of the time so around 7am) We have pancakes, eggs, potatoes, bacon, toast, chili, coffee and tea to warm us for the day. We rinse off in the river and begin to pack up for the long drive back. We drive pretty much the whole day but we make it fun and stop along the cool crystal shops and art installations that we didnt hit on the way up. We grab some fastfood on the way back for dinner to save time. We should get home around 9pm. We knock out of course for the rest of the night

DAY 7
Official rest day. We make an incredible breakfast, throw on some throwback halloween cartoons and do all of the adulting things while resting and preparing for your flight home. Full homey wholesome vibes. Then the next day early we drive you to your flight!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am truly blessed to say I have so many supportive people in my life. First and foremost, my family and friends always encouraged me to do the things I love, whether they fully understood the vision or not, they always lended their time, energy and resources to the cause. My husband Jonathan, brother Tyler, and sister Tatum are always down to help me film or make an appearance in videos themselves. My long time friend and photographer, Courtney, is my partner in crime on social media, the magic that is created when we join forces is unreal. I couldn’t be where I am now without them. And they are just to name a few. There are so many others I’m appreciative of and yall know who you are! The creatives, content creators, and artists, I have befriended on the way have been some of the biggest inspirations to me as well. Having like minded individuals who are also living radically chasing their dreams ignites my fire. Everyone I have worked with, the brands who took a chance on me, all the collabs, art, and content made have had a massive impact on my life. I’m grateful for them all!
