We had the good fortune of connecting with Shari Bisnaught and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shari, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
Nothing is permanent. One of my best friend’s started saying this to me when I was feeling a bit overwhelmed. Hearing this is instantly calming because it shifts your perspective. Now I use it regularly — even in the most mundane situations like standing in the line at the post office.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My mum is a wonderful seamstress and designer. As a child, she was making her own clothing back in Jamaica. Eventually she moved to New York with my father and continued designing hand bags and accessories. One could say I never had a choice to do anything else but design. Some of my greatest childhood memories are of my mum sewing leather in our garage turned studio.

I take a lot of pride knowing I am an extension of her… using the gift of creativity she’s passed down to me. When I accomplish something new, whether professionally and/or personally, she’s the first person I call. It is her hustle that reminds me to keep pushing my way through this industry that can be unforgiving. It is also her laugh that reminds me to see the beauty in the world.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Fun fact: most of my life revolves around food. I would probably pick one epic dinner spot in a different neighborhood each night. A few favs on the list would include Yang’s Kitchen, Hama, Mozza and Holbox. We could also head to the westside to check out the Getty Villa and grab some lobster rolls at Broad Street Oyster Company. Obviously, one gets thirsty for delicious wine, so that would bring us to the always lively Ruby Fruit in Silverlake. And iff this person calls themselves my best friend and would like to remain as such, we will get tattooed at The Dolorosa by the baddie Connie Kang.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I love my Aries queen, Jasmine Benjamin. We were introduced by a mutual friend back in 2017 for an Anderson .Paak music video. Honestly, it was one of my most memorable jobs to date. I’m not sure if this is a well known fact outside of the industry but wardrobe assisting is really difficult, especially when you’re working with someone for the first time. You’re trying to learn their aesthetic and communication style whilst juggling a plethora of other tasks during an always too short prep window. Not to mention, you’re never given enough money! Even with the odds stacked against you, you make it work, and we did. It looked badass.
